COVID-19 Impact"80% of Taiwan, China's tuna is exported to Japan, market freezes up and auction prices cool, Fisheries Agency: Subsidies to encourage fishermen to go to sea

Domestically caught tuna is an important source of income for fishermen, and 80% of it is exported to Japan. This year, affected by the pandemic, the Japanese market has frozen up and tuna prices have continued to fall. Among them, prices for bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna, which are caught year-round, have dropped by nearly 30%. The rare bluefin tuna has just entered its fishing season. Recently, Donggang and Su'ao auctioned the first bluefin tuna of the year one after another, and the promotional effect pushed the average auction price of bluefin tuna up against the trend, but whether the buying momentum can continue remains to be seen.

The sluggish market has made fishermen less willing to go to sea. Both the Donggang and Su'ao fishermen's associations said that if fish prices continue to fall, fishermen will give up going out to fish. To stabilize domestic aquatic product supply, the Fisheries Agency has proposed salary subsidies for fishermen, living allowances for fishermen, and subsidies for tuna auction prices, in order to maintain the normal operation of the domestic fishing industry.
