Which potted plants and flowers cannot be kept indoors?

Nowadays many families are starting to pay attention to the indoor environment, and flowers and plants have become the first choice for purifying indoor air. But many brightly colored flowers are not as simple as they appear. Below are several common poisonous flowers; you must be careful when growing these flowers indoors, especially if there are active young children at home. Please place these flowers and plants indoors with caution.

There are four categories of flowers that cannot be kept indoors:

1. Plants and flowers that easily produce unusual odors.

For example, pine and cypress plants secrete a resin-scented lipid substance that irritates the human digestive tract. If smelled for a long time, it not only affects appetite but also makes people restless, nauseous and vomiting, and dizzy. The unusual odor given off by yudingxiang (Syringa) can also cause asthma and chest tightness.

2. Oxygen-consuming plants and flowers.

Such as lilac, cordate telosma (night-blooming jasmine), etc., which consume a large amount of oxygen during photosynthesis. In addition, at night they also release large amounts of strongly olfactory-stimulating particles, making patients with high blood pressure and heart disease feel suffocated.

3. Plants and flowers that can cause allergies.

Some people get skin allergies when they touch plants such as hydrangea and geranium.

4. Poisonous plants and flowers.

For example, tulips, mimosa, poinsettia, oleander, white azalea, etc. Tulip flowers contain toxic alkaloids; a person staying among these flowers for 2 to 3 hours will become dizzy, and in severe cases hair loss may occur. White azalea flowers contain tetracyclic diterpenoid toxins; after poisoning, a person will vomit, have difficulty breathing, numbness in the limbs, and even go into shock.

So, which plants and flowers are suitable for keeping indoors?

1. Aloe —— one pot of aloe is equivalent to nine biological air purifiers

Potted aloe has the reputation of being an air purification expert. One pot of aloe is equal to nine biological air purifiers, and can absorb harmful substances such as formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. It is especially strong at absorbing formaldehyde. Under 4 hours of light, one pot of aloe can eliminate 90% of the formaldehyde in one square meter of air.

Aloe can also kill harmful microorganisms in the air and adsorb dust, playing a great role in purifying the indoor environment. When indoor harmful air is too high, spots will appear on the leaves of the aloe. This is a signal for help. As long as a few more pots of aloe are added indoors, the indoor air quality will return to normal.

2. Clivia —— a freshener that releases oxygen and absorbs smoke

One mature clivia can absorb 1 liter of air and release 80% oxygen in a day and night, and can carry out photosynthesis even under extremely weak light. It does not release carbon dioxide at night.

In a room of more than ten square meters, two or three pots of clivia can absorb the indoor smoke. Especially in the cold winter of the north, because doors and windows are tightly closed and indoor air does not circulate, clivia will play a very good role in regulating the air. Keep indoor air fresh.

3. Drip Guanyin (Alocasia) —— removes dust from the air

Drip Guanyin has the effect of removing dust from the air. However, the white sap in the stem of Drip Guanyin is toxic, and the water it drips is also toxic. Accidental contact with or ingestion of its sap will cause discomfort in the throat and mouth, with a burning pain in the stomach. Special care should be taken to prevent young children from accidentally eating it. However, Drip Guanyin is not a carcinogenic plant.

4. Rubber tree —— a generalist in eliminating harmful substances

The rubber tree is a generalist in eliminating harmful plants. It has a certain resistance to harmful gases in the air such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen fluoride. The rubber tree can also eliminate inhalable particulate pollution and can effectively retain indoor dust.

5. Aglaonema —— a unique air purification expert

Aglaonema is famous for its unique air purification ability. The higher the concentration of pollutants in the air, the more it can exert its purification ability! Therefore it is very suitable for dark rooms with poor ventilation.
