What to do when flowering plants have bare stems? These solutions you need to master
Some woody flowering plants, such as rubber tree (Ficus elastica), Schefflera octophylla, white michelia (Michelia alba), Cordyline fruticosa, and Dracaena fragrans, after growing for many years, often have bare, leafless lower and middle portions of the main trunk and side branches, which looks very unattractive. The solutions to the problem of bare stems in flowering plants are:
(1) T-shaped plant form pruning method: The T-shaped plant form means that leaves only grow at the top of the main trunk, with no leaves below the top, so that the whole plant looks like a green umbrella, resembling the shape of the English letter "T". This pruning method is suitable for tall woody foliage plants. When pruning, wait until the plant has grown to a certain height, then cut off the side branches and leaves on the lower part of the main trunk that are not needed, keep the branches and leaves at the top, then prune the top, and finally determine the height of the whole plant. After that, reshape and prune the top at any time. In this way, after a period of growth, the "T" plant form is formed.
(2) Main trunk truncation method: Truncate the main trunk of the plant to lower the crown and stimulate the sprouting of lateral buds, then purposefully select and keep lateral buds. The lateral buds should preferably be staggered in height, and 3 to 4 lateral buds are enough. All the remaining lateral buds should be removed, and then fertilizer and water management should be strengthened. In this way, before long, the plant will grow full and lush. When truncating, pay attention to the sprouting ability of the variety being cut. Flowering plants with strong sprouting ability can have more branches cut, while flowering plants with weak sprouting ability should have more branches and leaves retained, and branch cutting can be done in stages.
When using the above methods to prune flowering plants, it is best to do so in spring, because at this time the flowering plants grow vigorously and the plants are easy to shape.
