What flowers can be sown in winter? A rundown of eight cold-hardy flowers

Each different flower has a different sowing time. In general, flowers suitable for winter sowing include pothos, spider plant, clematis, hyacinth, kalanchoe, tulip, Christmas cactus, hyacinth and other flowers. These flowers all differ in cold hardiness, and they are all suitable for sowing in winter, allowing their seeds to germinate in the soil, though the survival rate is not as high as when sowing in spring and autumn.

1. Pothos

Pothos has strong cold hardiness and can be grown in pots indoors. It is usually propagated by cuttings, though it can actually also be propagated by sowing in winter. However, the temperature needs to be kept above 15°C for the pothos seeds to take root and sprout.

2. Spider plant

Spider plant has extremely strong adaptability to its environment. It can normally also be sown from seed in winter, but sowing in low winter temperatures makes it very difficult for its seeds to take root and sprout, and the temperature needs to be maintained between 18 and 22°C. It is usually best to sow in spring and autumn.

3. Clematis

When talking about which flowers can be sown in winter, clematis has many different varieties, and some of them are especially cold hardy. It can actually also be sown in winter, but the survival rate is not as high as when sowing in spring and autumn. When sowing in winter, it usually needs a protective frame for care.

4. Hyacinth

Hyacinth can generally tolerate low temperatures of 5°C and is hard to freeze in winter. If sowing from seed in winter, the hyacinth seeds need to be soaked in warm water to speed up germination; otherwise the hyacinth seeds will be very hard to sprout, and the seedlings are also easily damaged by cold.

5. Kalanchoe

Kalanchoe is a fairly common flower in our country. Even when it is not blooming, it has high ornamental value, and kalanchoe is relatively more cold hardy than most plants. It can also be sown in winter, but after the seeds take root and sprout, be sure to pay attention to water and temperature control during care.

6. Tulip

Tulip is especially strong in both cold and drought tolerance. It can generally also be propagated by sowing in winter, but it needs mild sunlight and the ambient temperature needs to be kept above 10°C for the seeds to sprout; otherwise the seeds will not sprout.

7. Christmas cactus

Christmas cactus likes to grow in a warm, humid environment and also has a certain degree of cold hardiness. It is generally distributed fairly widely in the northern regions of our country, and it can also be propagated by sowing seeds as winter temperatures gradually drop, but the survival rate is not as high as when sowing in spring and autumn.

8. Hyacinth

Hyacinth has many different varieties, and each variety differs in cold hardiness. Hyacinth can generally also be sown in winter, and it can usually tolerate cold down to around 0°C. As long as the temperature does not drop below 0°C, its seeds will take root and sprout, and it usually needs to be placed in sunlight for careful care.
