Taichung's first solar photovoltaic weatherproof courts help cut carbon

Building Taichung's first solar photovoltaic weatherproof courts! To provide young people with a sports space unaffected by the weather, the Taichung City Sports Bureau is building a solar photovoltaic roof over 2 full-court basketball courts in Sanhe Park in Daya District. It can generate about 33,000 kWh of electricity a year, enough to cover the annual electricity use of nearly 10 households, and is expected to cut 18.36 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of 1,800 trees. It combines a quality sports space with carbon reduction and air pollution control, and is expected to break ground in March and be completed in December.

Taichung City Sports Bureau Director Li Yu-jui said that to make Taichung a sunny, sporting and healthy city, the city government is working with solar photovoltaic manufacturers to build a solar photovoltaic roof in Sanhe Park in Daya District, solving the problems of heatstroke risk in hot weather and water accumulating on the courts during the rainy season, and providing young people and nearby residents with a better sports space.

The Taichung City Sports Bureau pointed out that what makes these courts special is that the solar power system is raised on stilts, so the space underneath can be used for weatherproof courts, allowing the land to be fully used and to deliver maximum benefit. It hopes to increase the courts' usage rate while also serving the environmental education goal of green power generation. A pre-construction briefing is expected to be held at Sanhe Park on January 14, with construction to start in March and be completed in December.
