Countryside Kiln-Building Fun Kicks Off in Caotun, Over 2,000 People Join the Grand Event
The kiln-building activity loved by the public is back. The 2019 Nantou Flower Carnival series event - "Caotun Countryside Kiln-Building Fun" - kicked off on the 15th in the fields next to the Chen Fu General Temple in Caotun. This year's 300 kilns were snapped up as soon as registration opened, and it was soon announced that all spots were full, attracting more than 2,000 people from all over the country who brought their families to join the grand event. Adults relived childhood memories, and children experienced the fun of early kiln-building, making for a very lively scene.
On the 15th, the weather was mild and clear. Participants built earthen kilns under the bright sun. Besides putting on sun hats, they also set up large sun umbrellas, and some even brought out tents, doing everything possible to block the sun. Some kilns were built painstakingly by fathers alone, while mothers took the children to the side to cool off and wait for the food. Some mothers and children worked together to prepare ingredients, while others brought out the whole family to build their own unique earthen kiln together. While experiencing the fun of kiln-building and tasting countryside food, they also saw whether they could stand out among the 300 earthen kilns and win honors in the kiln-building contest such as the World's Biggest Kiln, the World's Tiniest Kiln, or the Creative Shape Kiln.
At the opening event, Lin Xiumei, deputy director of the Nantou County Tourism Department, and Jian Jingxian, mayor of Caotun Township, along with guests, rolled up their sleeves and personally joined in piling up earthen kilns. In addition to the local foods provided by the township office such as sweet potatoes, corn, and native eggs, many people also prepared different ingredients such as earthen-kiln chicken. At noon, the Erma Association of Beitou Chaoyang Temple sponsored local food. The ingenious event let everyone experience the countryside leisure fun of early farming life.
