Rescuing peanuts becomes a battle between local and central government; only four farmers' associations in Yunlin join guaranteed-price purchase; Agriculture and Food Agency: clearly political factors

Recently, peanut farm-gate prices have fluctuated sharply under the influence of rumors. The Council of Agriculture has called on farmers' groups in Yunlin to cooperate with "guaranteed-price purchase," but in Yunlin, which accounts for 70% of the nation's peanut output, only four farmers' associations have agreed to make purchases, leaving peanut inventories at full capacity and forcing emergency rental of paper mills for storage, raising outside doubts about possible hygiene concerns. Hu Chung-yi, Director-General of the Agriculture and Food Agency, explained that peanuts are currently stored "in shell" and that recent low temperatures mean there is no risk of aflatoxin.

To safeguard food safety, the Agriculture and Food Agency, together with the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, has already sent purchased and stored peanuts for sampling and testing; the test report will be released in a week, and random testing will continue in the future. Regarding the four farmers' associations' refusal to cooperate with the purchase policy on grounds such as "insufficient cold-storage technology and insufficient funds," Hu Chung-yi sharply criticized them: "The very purpose of a farmers' association's existence is to help farmers. In recent years, as rice production has declined, how could the associations not have storage space?" He said the unwillingness to cooperate is clearly due to political factors.
