Low-temperature policies for sea bass and tilapia close on the 15th; Chiayi County Government urges fishermen to take out insurance in time

To spread the risk of natural disaster losses for aquaculture fishermen, the Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan launched "temperature-parameter aquaculture insurance" for the first time in 2019, with policies for tilapia and sea bass, and the insurance period runs until December 15, while the deadline for accepting premium subsidies is until December 16. In addition, the central government subsidizes 1/3 of the insurance premium, and Chiayi County adds another 1/3 subsidy, reducing the burden on fishermen; fishermen only need to pay 1/3 themselves to obtain protection against losses from low-temperature cold damage in farmed sea bass or tilapia.

The Chiayi County Agriculture Department said that the "temperature-parameter aquaculture insurance" launched by the Council of Agriculture and Fubon Insurance is being sold for the first time for two species, sea bass and tilapia, and the insurance period runs from 10 days after acceptance to March 15 of the following year. When the temperature at the weather station agreed upon in the fisherman's policy remains below 10°C continuously for 10 hours or more, the claim is triggered; the claim amount is calculated as the product of the "insured amount", "payout ratio", and "cumulative input cost ratio", minus the deductible that the insured must bear, with no limit on the number of claims during the insurance period, and the total claim amount is capped at the insured amount.

Sea bass insurance amounts are offered in two options, 500,000 yuan and 1,000,000 yuan, with premiums in the Chiayi area of 117,831 yuan and 235,663 yuan per hectare; tilapia insurance amounts are offered in two options, 300,000 yuan and 600,000 yuan, with premiums in the Chiayi area of 68,499 yuan and 136,999 yuan per hectare. The central government and the county government each subsidize 1/3 of the premium, so fishermen only need to bear 1/3 to obtain insurance protection.

The Chiayi County Government further explained that, following grouper and milkfish insurance, low-temperature policies for sea bass and tilapia have also been developed to provide protection. The insurance period runs until December 15, and the deadline for accepting premium subsidies is until December 16. It calls on fishermen farming sea bass and tilapia to seize the opportunity and insure actively.
