Please stop planting cabbage! November cabbage seedlings surge into the "purple alert" again, and a professional farmer laments: if the market collapses and crops are dumped, the entire industry will take a fall

Cabbage rush-planting hits a new high, and November cabbage seedlings light up the purple warning! After the late-August overplanting of cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), the Agriculture and Food Agency issued a "purple light" warning and urged farmers not to increase planting, and the September planting wave cooled slightly. However, October cabbage planting once again exceeded the reasonable range, triggering three consecutive red lights.

Although cabbage prices have been weak since coming to market, the number of cabbage plants set out in November has climbed to a new high again. According to the latest statistics, in just 10 days the number of seedlings supplied across Taiwan reached 7.111 million plants, up 34% compared with the same period in the past five years, and already exceeding the "warning threshold" baseline of 5.4 million plants (Note 1). This planting period is expected to enter harvest in late January. Although it coincides with the Lunar New Year holiday, when demand for food is high, the increased supply also raises concerns about an imbalance between production and sales. The Agriculture and Food Agency issued a second "purple alert" notice, calling on farmers not to enter planting again.

Cabbage market prices are weak, with auction prices falling to 10.5 yuan per kilogram by the end of November

Domestic cabbage planting has exploded into oversupply since August this year, and market prices have shown a downward trend since October, with even "3 heads for 50 yuan" promotions appearing on the market. Looking at the overall national cabbage auction trend in November, recent transaction prices have continued to fluctuate between 10 and 11 yuan per kilogram. Today (the 28th), the average cabbage auction price in Taipei First and Second Markets stood at 10.5 yuan per kilogram, the lowest price this month.
