Why do some flowers need asexual reproduction

Asexual reproduction uses branches, buds, leaves, root suckers, tubers, bulbs, and so on from the mother plant, and is carried out through methods such as cuttings, grafting, layering, and division to grow new plants. The reasons why some flowers need asexual reproduction are listed below:

1. Many flowers cannot set seed because their ovaries have degenerated, such as poinsettia and Chinese hibiscus. Some flowers native to tropical and subtropical regions also rarely flower and fruit in the north, such as Swiss cheese plant, Aglaia odorata, and jasmine, so these flowers need asexual reproduction.

2. In addition, many flowers are superior varieties selected through cross-breeding, and the superior traits of these varieties can usually be preserved only by asexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction can enhance stress resistance and improve ornamental value. For example, many varieties of cactus have relatively weak root systems, but when grafted onto the vigorously growing three-ribbed sword cactus, they grow and multiply quite rapidly.

3. Some flowers can bloom earlier when asexual reproduction is used, such as Chinese peony, clivia, and sweet osmanthus.
