How to tell whether flowers prefer shade or sun by looking at their leaves

1. Distinguish by leaf shape

(1) Needle-leaved flowering plants: those with needle-like leaves, such as five-needle pine, cedar, and creeping juniper, mostly belong to the sun-loving type; those with flat, scale-like leaves, such as Chinese arborvitae and Buddhist pine, are slightly shade-tolerant.

(2) Broad-leaved flowering plants: evergreen broad-leaved flowering plants mostly belong to the shade-loving or semi-shade-loving type, such as Chinese evergreen, Swiss cheese plant, begonia, camellia, Michelia alba, and rhododendron; deciduous broad-leaved flowering plants mostly belong to the sun-loving type, such as garden balsam, peach blossom, chrysanthemum, Chinese rose, pomegranate, plum blossom, lotus, and water lily.

2. According to the density of branches and leaves

Those with small and relatively dense branches and leaves mostly belong to the semi-shade-loving type, such as asparagus fern, asparagus fern, and nandina; those with large, relatively sparse and spreading branches and leaves mostly belong to the sun-loving type, such as scarlet sage, pansy, coleus, oleander, and jasmine.

3. According to the leathery texture of the leaf surface

Those with relatively thick, leathery leaf surfaces mostly belong to shade-tolerant flowers. Such as cast-iron plant, orchid, clivia, and rubber tree.
