A simple method for growing flowers by water propagation

Artificial flower growing methods include seeds, spores and cuttings, among which cuttings are the most important method. The cutting propagation method has many advantages, the main ones being: the method is simple, materials are plentiful, the number of seedlings produced is large, the seedlings mature quickly, they flower early, and the inherent characteristics of the original variety can be maintained. Among these, water propagation has the above advantages plus the following:

Sufficient water, high humidity above the water surface, good ventilation and air flow, and a small day-night temperature difference in the water temperature, all of which favor flower rooting. Management is simple, hygienic, time-saving and labor-saving.

1. Water propagation methods

1.1 Use a wide-mouth bottle, beaker, canning jar, drinking glass or other container with a relatively large opening, fill it with water first, then cut a robust, pest- and disease-free branch about 10 cm long with 2-4 nodes and insert it into the water. During the rooting process, be careful to keep the water clean; if necessary, change the water once every 2 days. In addition, for branches whose wounds exude sap, it works better to let them dry in a shady, cool place before inserting them.

1.2 For propagation on the water surface of a large basin, glass tank, water tank, pond, etc., choose one to several foam boards and punch round holes of about 3 cm in them at a certain row spacing and plant spacing; then insert the cut branches one by one into the round holes; finally, let them float on the water surface. Likewise, during the rooting process, be careful to keep the water clean. For flowers that root easily, the branches can root after about 15 days. For flowers that are difficult to root, the branches can also produce roots after 1-2 months; once the roots grow to 3-5 cm, they can be taken out and planted in flower pots. Place the newly potted flowers in a cool, shady place, and after 7-10 days of acclimatization, a new pot of flowers has been successfully grown. The water propagation rooting method is suitable for many flowers.

2. Types suitable for water propagation

By drawing on the experience of predecessors and the author's water propagation experiments in the greenhouse and laboratory, common flowers that can be used for water propagation include:

Monstera deliciosa, jasmine, crown of thorns, Cordyline fruticosa, hydrangea, English ivy, wax begonia, Indian rubber tree, oleander, gardenia, fuchsia, Impatiens walleriana, purple velvet plant, kalanchoe, Pilea cadierei, umbrella plant, coleus, Aucuba japonica, spider plant, Dieffenbachia picta, cactus vine, pothos, Begonia maculata, Begonia argenteo-guttata, nasturtium, taro, Tradescantia zebrina, jade plant, Reineckea carnea, Syngonium podophyllum, croton, Dracaena fragrans, purple heart, Peperomia obtusifolia variegata, cactus, Chinese rose, night-blooming jasmine, Aloe vera, Peperomia obtusifolia (leaf cuttings also work), Schefflera arboricola, Schefflera octophylla, pencil cactus, poinsettia, snake plant (leaf cuttings), chrysanthemum, Aglaonema modestum, firethorn.
