Tips for growing watermelon

In cool weather, watermelon seeds should be started indoors, but one month before transplanting, plant three seeds per peat pot at a depth of 1/4 inch. Provide heat to keep the soil at least 80 – 85 ℉. Cut off all but the strongest seedlings as true leaves appear, and about one week after frost, transplant two or three plants per hill with 6 – 8 " spacing for good results. Gardeners in warm weather can also sow watermelon directly once soil temperature reaches at least 75 degrees Celsius, planting six seeds per hill with 6 – 8 " spacing for good results. Thin to the strongest two or three plants as the seedlings emerge. Watermelon should be planted in full sun and rich, loose soil. Young seedlings may benefit from black plastic for warming the soil.
