When it comes to the finest of all Haworthia cooperi varieties, none can compare to the Neon. At the height of the craze, the Neon Haworthia sold for 10,000 yuan per gram, far exceeding the price of platinum. Why are so many plant enthusiasts crazy about the Neon? Why could the Neon sell for such a high price? Let us read on together to find out!

The story behind the Neon

1. The Neon is a very classic Haworthia cooperi variety. Later, many new varieties of Haworthia cooperi appeared, and their prices have far surpassed it, but in terms of beauty they fall short by quite a bit;

2. The sharp price surge set off a wave of beheading propagation in China. I have seen many Neons across the country (seeing them in person rather than in photos), yet fine specimens (good variegation, good variety, good condition) are rarely seen. They have all been beheaded, which is a bit of a pity;

3. Many plant enthusiasts want a Neon of their own, but some Neon specialists now sell seedlings as thin as toothpicks, with very poor plant resistance, slow growth, and great uncertainty in the direction of variegation. I personally suggest that propagators grow them larger before selling (though this goes against market rules), and that enthusiasts try to choose larger ones with more obvious variegation when buying (better to spend a bit more money than to chase a bargain);

4. The quality and varieties of Neons on the market are uneven, and some seed-grown varieties are also passed off as Neons, so if possible, try to ask to see the mother plant when buying, or simply seek one from a reputable grower;

5. The leaves that a Neon produces after reaching maturity are true leaves, and they differ greatly from the milky leaves. True leaves are very thick and smooth, almost hairless, and their translucency is a step up as well. I suggest that owners not be in a hurry to behead or pull leaves for propagation. The original intention of growing plants is to grow them beautifully, not to propagate them to recoup costs.
