Watermelon is one of our favorite fruits to eat in summer. Do you know the varieties of watermelon and what characteristics they have? Let's first get to know the Hongguanlong variety of watermelon!

The original code of the Hongguanlong variety is 1208. It is a first-generation hybrid bred by the Vegetable and Flower Research Institute of the Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It passed crop variety approval in Shaanxi Province in 1997. It is still planted now, and this variety can often be seen on the market.

Characteristics: The fruit appearance is similar to “Jinzhong Guanlong”. The flesh is red, so it is called Hongguanlong. Its seeds are small and few, it is not hollow, and the texture is fine, crisp, juicy and refreshing. The whole growth period of this variety is about 100 days. It has good stress resistance and strong fruit-setting ability. The light green rind has dark green stripes, and the flavor is good. The central sugar content is 12.6%, the rind thickness is about 1 cm, it is storage- and transport-resistant, and the average fruit weight is 9-10 kg, with a maximum of 23 kg. It is highly resistant to fusarium wilt and anthracnose, is not easily infected by viral diseases, and has excellent drought resistance and moisture tolerance. It is late-maturing, with a growth period of about 100 days. The fruit expands quickly, and the yield is about 5000 kg per mu.

Suitable cultivation locations include Shaanxi, Gansu, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan, Anhui, Guangxi and other places.

When planting this variety, attention should be paid to applying heavy base fertilizer and preventing insects. It sets fruit very easily, so root melons and fruit buds close to the root should be removed in time, and the 2nd or 3rd female flower should be kept for fruit setting at about 1.5 m from the root. Stop watering 7-10 days before the fruit ripens, otherwise the sugar content will be low and the melon flavor will be bland.
