Cultivation methods for various flowers

1. Charring method: Burn the end of the flower stem over a candle flame until charred, then immediately soak it in alcohol for one minute, and then rinse it in clean water. Hydrangea, lilac, banksia rose, Chinese peony, Chinese rose, chrysanthemum, coral tree, etc. can all be treated this way.

2. Scalding method: Soak the base of the flower stem in boiling water for about ten seconds, which blocks the cut and prevents sap from leaking out of the stem tissues.

3. Deep water rescue method: When fresh flowers droop, cut off a small section from the end of the stem, then place it in a container filled with cold water, leaving only the flower head above the water surface. After one to two hours, the stem will revive. This method is suitable for both herbaceous and woody flowers.

4. Preservative method: Add an appropriate amount of fresh flower preservative to the container holding the arrangement to extend the time the flowers last. In addition, using a 1/3000 aspirin aqueous solution or a 1/2000 potassium permanganate aqueous solution for gladiolus can extend the flowering period by three to five days. Adding an appropriate amount of boric acid, sulfur, carbolic acid, salicylic acid, salt, vitamins, etc. also helps extend the flowering period.

5. Enlarged cut method: Generally, cut the base of the flower stem at an angle; or split the base into two to four parts and insert small stones to prop the cut open; you can also hammer the base to crack it and increase the water-absorbing surface. Among these, the angled cut method is the most commonly used, while the latter two are mainly used for woody flowers such as magnolia, hydrangea, lilac, and wisteria

6. Sterilization method: Putting alcohol, KMnO4, camphor, boric acid, citric acid, salt, alum, etc. into water can all have a sterilizing effect. Only if the water does not rot can the plants absorb water and stay fresh. Note: Be sure to prepare a solution before use. Do not put them directly into water without dissolving them first. When using salt, be careful that the concentration is not too high.

7. Nutrient method: After fresh flowers are cut from the parent plant, they lose their nutrient source. Various nutrients such as sugar, beer, aspirin, and vitamin C can be added.

8. Spraying and injection method: For many flowers with hollow stems, the cut end can be held under a faucet to force water in.

Precautions:

1. Keep the water clean: Change the water every day, and trim the roots every day to expose a fresh cut. Remove excess leaves from the part that is submerged in water.

2. Keep away from the ripening agent ethylene: Keep away from vegetables and fruits, because they release a large amount of ethylene, causing fresh flowers to deteriorate. At the same time, promptly clean up spoiled flowers and fruits.

3. Fresh-keeping temperature: Ordinary flowers at around 5 degrees, tropical flowers at around 10-12 degrees.

4. Placement: In summer, keep away from direct sunlight; in winter, keep away from drafty openings.
