What are the methods for controlling flower borers?
1. Plug the borer holes with petroleum jelly, which blocks air circulation and suffocates the borers inside the holes.
2. Insert a wire into the borer hole to pierce the borer to death. Bend the tip of the wire into a hook shape to pull the insect body out. If a borer is pierced, a watery fluid will adhere to the end of the wire.
3. Insert a cotton ball soaked in dichlorvos into the borer hole, seal the opening with clay or petroleum jelly, and the borer can be killed.
4. Inject pure alcohol into the borer hole so that it penetrates the branch and kills the insect.
5. Borer eggs are laid on young stems; after hatching they become green caterpillars that crawl along the stem and bore into it. Therefore, during their crawling period, especially when the plant sprouts tender new branches in early spring, repellent pesticide should be applied as early as possible.
6. For branches and trunks into which larvae have already bored, when necessary, cut them off together with the insect body at about 2 cun below the borer hole.
