Flowers & Gardening 0 views
Red Lips is a succulent plant in the Crassulaceae family, Echeveria genus. It has rich colors, including wine red, reddish brown, and pink, and the entire plant can even turn bright red. So do you know how to grow Echeveria 'Red Lips'? Take a look at what the Succulent Garden presents for you.

Morphological Characteristics of Red Lips

The Red Lips plant is upright, rosette-shaped, solitary or clustering, single-headed or multi-headed. The leaves are whorled, thick and fleshy, spoon-shaped or lanceolate. The upper surface of the leaf is relatively flat, while the underside is raised with a keel line. They are grass green with pointed tips and red-tinged leaf margins. In autumn and winter, under sufficient light and with increasing temperature differences, the leaf color becomes even redder and the colors more varied, including wine red, reddish brown, and pink. Some even have entire leaves or the whole plant turning bright red, especially the leaf tips, which become as red as if "dyed with cinnabar." Fine short fuzz grows on the leaves and stems, adding even more ornamental value.

Red Lips blooms in summer. The flower buds look like mini fuzzy balls, with 5 petals, pale yellow, with fine reddish-brown speckles, and the flowers open gradually from bottom to top.

Growth Habits of Echeveria 'Red Lips'

Red Lips is robust by nature and grows relatively fast. It prefers a sunny, warm, and dry growing environment. It is drought-tolerant and tolerant of partial shade, not cold-tolerant, averse to waterlogging, and afraid of muggy heat. The optimal growing temperature is 20-30°C. It can be kept outdoors year-round, but in summer high temperatures it needs appropriate shading, and during extreme low temperatures in winter it needs to be placed indoors in a sunny spot for short-term care, letting the plant bathe in ample sunlight and breathe fresh air so it grows more robust.

Precautions for Growing Echeveria 'Red Lips'

Red Lips does not have a very high water demand. Keeping the potting soil moist is sufficient. Still follow the general practice of "do not water until dry, and water thoroughly when you do." In rainy seasons, appropriately control watering and also prevent water accumulation. In winter, when temperatures are low, also control watering. The best planting soil is loose, well-draining sandy loam. You can mix your own or buy ready-made soil. When potting, you can appropriately add some base fertilizer; slow-release granular fertilizer, disinfected dried cow manure, plant ash, and the like are all fine. The usual propagation method is leaf cuttings, as this makes it relatively easy to survive.
