Suitable overwintering temperatures for flowers

Because winters in the north are cold, some potted flowers native to the south must be moved indoors to overwinter. Below are the suitable overwintering temperatures for several southern flowers, for the reference of flower growers.

For Aglaia odorata (mock lime), the suitable overwintering temperature is 10°C-12°C. If it is too low, the leaves tend to drop; if it is too high, the terminal buds easily sprout and grow tender thin branches and leaves, and when moved outdoors the following year the shoot tips easily dry out, affecting flowering.

For Michelia figo (banana shrub), the suitable overwintering temperature is 5°C-10°C. Attention should be paid to proper ventilation and restrained watering. If the room temperature exceeds 15°C, the flower buds already formed in autumn will bloom prematurely, but the fragrance of the flowers is extremely faint and the quality is poor.

For Camellia japonica (camellia), the suitable overwintering temperature is 3°C-5°C. The flower buds of camellia have already formed at the turn of summer and autumn; if they do not go through a period of low-temperature dormancy, the buds develop poorly. If the room temperature exceeds 15°C, they easily sprout prematurely, causing leaf and bud drop, and they cannot bloom.

For Jasminum sambac (jasmine), the suitable overwintering temperature is 8°C-12°C. If the temperature is too low, the leaves easily drop. At this time, if watering is not careful, too dry conditions easily cause death by drying out, while too wet conditions easily cause root rot.

For Osmanthus fragrans (osmanthus), the suitable overwintering temperature is 0°C-5°C. If the temperature is too high, some leaf buds easily sprout prematurely, producing thin weak branches, consuming nutrients, weakening the growth vigor of the following year and affecting flowering.

For kumquat, fingered citron and other flowers, the suitable overwintering temperature is 5°C-10°C. If the temperature is below 5°C and watering is excessive, it easily causes heavy leaf drop, affecting flowering and fruit setting the following year. If the temperature is too high, they continue to grow, with thin branches and sparse leaves, and the following year they do not bloom or a large number of flowers and fruits drop.
