How to plant newly bought succulents
Generally, succulents bought with a pot come with soil and a pot that are not very good, so it is best to change the soil and pot yourself. First, pull off the fibrous roots (especially fine roots) and dead roots (black roots) (pulling them off by hand is recommended, do not cut them with scissors). Bad roots come off with a gentle pull, leaving the healthy roots. Then let them dry in a shaded, ventilated place for one or two days. After the wounds have healed, pot them in moist soil.
After potting, still keep them in a shaded, ventilated place and keep the potting soil moist. When the lowest leaves become firm, it means the root system has grown well and they can gradually be exposed to sunlight. During this period, one or two leaves at the bottom may wither, which is normal.
Daily care and management of succulents
1. Soil mix: If you are growing only a few, just go to tb and buy a pre-mixed soil. If you are growing many, you can mix your own: peat (40{bf}) : rice husk carbon (10{bf}) : 3-6mm granular soil (50{bf}, such as kanuma soil). Follow this ratio roughly. If the environment is well ventilated and the pot is small and breathable, you can add a little less granular soil; otherwise, add more granular soil.
2. Choosing a flower pot: Be sure to buy a pot with drainage holes. Terracotta pots are very breathable, which is a good choice for people whose environment is not well ventilated and who cannot resist watering too much. However, it is still recommended to choose one 7cm or larger, because if the pot is too small, the soil dries out easily and the succulents grown are not plump. That said, succulents grown in terracotta pots tend to develop good coloration more easily.
Plastic pots and ceramic pots are not very breathable. It is recommended to choose wide-mouthed ones, and definitely do not choose the narrow-necked kind, which is not breathable. Root-control pots and clay pots have breathability between the above two types and are both good choices. Dark-colored pots absorb light. If you use dark plastic pots, it is beneficial for succulents in winter. But in summer, you must do a good job of shading. Shading only the succulents is not enough; the pots absolutely must not be exposed to the sun either!
Actually, pots of any material can be chosen, as long as you match the soil according to breathability. But it is best to pay attention to the shape of the pot: if the pot body is not breathable, do not choose a narrow-mouthed one. The roots of succulents are generally rather shallow, so tall pots are not recommended, as they are not breathable and prone to root rot.
If the succulents grow larger and block the pot opening, you need to repot them, otherwise watering is difficult and breathability will be seriously affected.
