Southern Ao Coral Culture 07: Yilan Coral Dharma Realm, Guardian Home and Museum
Text / Zhang Yayun
Walking into the small alleys of Southern Ao in the afternoon, there are always surprises while wandering through them. There are long-established pork stalls, old-fashioned Chinese herbal medicine shops and quilt shops, and of course rice cake shops and seafood snack stalls full of customers. The air carries the unique fishy freshness and heavy oiliness of a fishing port; this is the everyday life of a small place.

Note 1: In 2012, the Lanyang Museum published the book "Home, This Is a Museum: Yilan Museum Family Guidebook," introducing the stories of 12 family museums. Among the 12 museum stories, some use their own homes as museums, some have families participating in their operation, and there are also community museums that create new meaning for their homeland. Author Huang Shuying said that the book title uses a pun on the Mandarin "home" and the Taiwanese "tsia" (here), which sound the same, to highlight the role of small local museums, and the "Coral Dharma Realm Museum" is the prototype of a home museum.
