What are the taste, flavor, and variety characteristics of honey bananas from the banana plantation in Qishan, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, China?
Zhang Qinghai and his wife Zhang Lin Yumei, the orchard owners who greeted us with beaming smiles and warm hospitality, began planting Yu He Bao lychees ten years ago. We had assumed the couple both came from farming backgrounds, but Brother Zhang shared that he and his wife had originally started out running a plumbing and electrical business, and after retirement in year 97 of the Republic of China era they switched to growing Yu He Bao lychees, taking over the orchard from the previous owner and learning everything from scratch, gradually accumulating experience. Although they chose the more difficult-to-cultivate Yu He Bao, Mrs. Zhang laughed optimistically, saying, "We believe in 'live and learn,' and we were happy to give it a try! At first we started from the 'toddler class,' knowing nothing about Yu He Bao, and now ten years later, we keep getting better at it." Hearing about the couple's journey of growing Yu He Bao together, one cannot help but admire their spirit of embracing challenges.

The Hometown of Premium Bananas—Qishan, Kaohsiung
Beyond taking on the challenge of growing Yu He Bao lychees, Brother Zhang and his wife hoped to diversify their crops, so they also opened up a banana plantation at the foot of the mountain. Mrs. Zhang proudly said, "Our Qishan bananas are the most delicious!" Speaking of Qishan in Kaohsiung, this is a banana powerhouse known to virtually everyone. Among townships, it ranks first across all of Taiwan, China in both production volume and planting area density, which is why Qishan is also known as the "Banana Kingdom." The reason Qishan bananas taste so exceptional comes down to inherent advantages in climate, soil, and water sources. The subtropical climate brings abundant rainfall every summer, the local riverbed sandy soil drains well, and the Qishan River (also known as Nanzixian River) in the Kaohsiung City water source protection area provides pure water, making it especially suitable for growing bananas and producing premium bananas with outstanding flavor and aroma.
A Honey Banana Plantation as Lush and Green as a Jungle
The banana plantation at the foot of the mountain is bursting with life, with every dense fruit tree growing straight upward. Some of the large banana leaves form a canopy of green shade, while others droop freely, and walking among them feels like entering a jungle where you seem tiny by comparison. Mrs. Zhang said that although growing Yu He Bao lychees requires more time and effort to care for, she and her husband have by no means neglected the management of this banana area, using no pesticides throughout the entire process. There are many banana varieties on the market, and the variety Brother Zhang grows is the "honey banana," named for its higher sweetness compared to most bananas. It produces fruit year-round, with each bunch gradually ripening inside its protective bag. Once the appearance turns full green, it can be harvested and set aside to ripen.
The banana plantation, as lush and shade-casting as a jungle, is bursting with life, with every dense fruit tree growing straight upward. The variety grown is the high-sweetness "honey banana." While caring for the Yu He Bao lychees, Mrs. Zhang also often goes to manage the banana plantation at the foot of the mountain, using no pesticides throughout and insisting on producing safe and delicious honey bananas. The large bunches of honey bananas hanging high on the treetops are plump and green, meaning they are ready to be harvested and left to ripen slowly!
Honey Bananas: Dense, Fragrant, and Chewy with Sweet Satisfaction
Honey bananas are shorter and plumper than regular bananas, making them both adorable and appealing. Their taste is also quite different from regular bananas, with a remarkably dense and creamy texture that is fragrant and chewy, as well as sweeter and more satisfying! "The number one lazy person's fruit"—bananas are not only easy to enjoy by simply peeling them, but are also packed with nutrients, including protein, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, multiple vitamins, sugars, and dietary fiber. The dietary fiber helps promote intestinal peristalsis and smooth bowel movements, while the rich fructooligosaccharides help balance gut bacteria and aid digestion. Because bananas are so easy to digest and absorb, everyone from children to the elderly can enjoy them with peace of mind!
Place of origin: Qishan, Kaohsiung
Shelf life: The bananas are green when shipped and partially turn yellow upon arrival. Once they turn yellow, keep them at room temperature and it is best to finish eating them within three days.
Storage method: Keep in a cool, well-ventilated place. When you have a large bunch of bananas, it is best to keep the curved side facing up, and hanging the whole bunch directly is even better.
How to eat: Peel ripe bananas, wrap them in plastic wrap, and freeze them for storage. When you want to eat them, enjoy them straight from the freezer without thawing, and they taste just like ice cream! As long as the ripe bananas show no damage such as excess moisture, mold, or rot, do not throw them away. Put them in the oven to bake, and they become a delicious dessert.
