Many gardening friends like to grow bowl lotus in pots, but they generally use pond mud as the substrate and then pour in clean water to grow it. Bowl lotus generally maintains vigorous growth and blooms in an environment where pond mud and water coexist, and the care and management process is also very simple, even with rough care in the short term, no adverse conditions will appear. So, can bowl lotus be grown without soil?

In fact, bowl lotus can also be grown without soil, but several conditions need to be met. If you grow bowl lotus in water alone without any substrate, the roots of the bowl lotus will not be able to anchor, and the whole plant will float in the water, wandering around, just like a child wandering without a home, with no support, so its growth will naturally be poor.

First, we need to prepare a flowerpot of suitable size, but do not use a transparent glass pot, because the roots of the bowl lotus are afraid of light, otherwise it is not good for its growth. It is generally recommended to use a ceramic pot that cannot transmit light through the pot wall, and the bottom should not have a drainage hole, to avoid water flowing out from the bottom; even if the bottom of the pot has holes, they must be blocked tightly to avoid water leakage.

Second, the amount of water in the pot should be appropriate, and the water depth should be controlled so that the roots of the bowl lotus just touch the bottom while the leaves are just level with the water surface. Also, in the early stage of pot culture, change the water regularly and frequently, try to change the water once a week, and after about three consecutive weeks, wait until the bowl lotus has a certain water-purifying ability before appropriately reducing the frequency of water changes, but add water appropriately according to the growth of the bowl lotus to ensure it can support its stems and leaves.

Third, although we do not use pond mud at the bottom of the pot, in order to prevent the plant from floating and wandering around in the pot, it is recommended to spread a layer of perlite on the bottom of the pot, or put in some pebbles. The main purpose of doing this is to fix the roots of the bowl lotus and prevent them from wandering around, and at the same time it is also more conducive to better promoting the growth of the bowl lotus. Moreover, putting some perlite or pebbles at the bottom of the pot can also play a certain decorative role, and can improve the ornamental value of the potted plant to a certain extent.

Finally, in order to ensure that the bowl lotus can maintain vigorous growth and also bloom beautiful flowers, we also need to appropriately use a little nutrient solution for it. After all, without pond mud in the pot, the bowl lotus cannot obtain nutrients from the soil, so appropriately using a little nutrient solution can supplement some nutrients for it and lay a foundation for its growth and flowering. When the plant grows to a certain extent, under suitable care conditions, it will naturally bloom.
