Is it good to grow osmanthus in a porcelain pot placed indoors?
Osmanthus is a fragrant flowering plant, and it is also one of China's ten traditional famous flowers. Although it is a relatively common mass-market flowering plant, quite a few gardening friends grow it as a potted plant at home. And in fact, potted osmanthus is very easy to manage and very simple to care for; as long as you can provide it with a basic growing environment, it will often grow well and bloom abundantly with a rich fragrance.
However, when growing osmanthus in pots, in order to bring out its ornamental value, we often also need to give it a suitable flower pot. But the flower pots on the market are dazzling in their variety, with pots of all sizes, models, shapes, textures and colors making one's eyes blur, and finding a suitable pot is not really that easy. So, is it good to grow osmanthus in a porcelain pot?
As for whether it is actually good to grow osmanthus in a porcelain pot, it mainly depends on whether its texture is good and whether it can affect the plant's normal growth. In terms of appearance, whether in shape or color pattern, porcelain pots are generally made very exquisitely and have very high ornamental value. But we also cannot choose overly exquisite flower pots to grow osmanthus, since after all the main subject that a potted plant needs to highlight is the osmanthus tree, not the flower pot. Generally, the pot should be made to match the plant harmoniously, so as to raise the overall ornamental value of the potted plant.
But this is still not the main point; the main point remains whether it can cause adverse effects on the growth of osmanthus, so we also need to focus on analyzing it from the aspect of texture. In terms of material, porcelain pots generally have relatively poor permeability, being unfavorable both for air circulation and for water drainage. And osmanthus often requires a growing environment that is loose, breathable and highly permeable, because its root system is very well developed, so the underground part is generally rather large. If a porcelain pot is used to grow osmanthus, once overwatering occurs, it will often bring relatively serious problems. So, what serious consequences will occur after overwatering when growing osmanthus in a porcelain pot?
First, using a porcelain pot goes against the growth habits of osmanthus. Once water accumulates in the pot, the porcelain pot cannot promptly drain the excess water out, and coupled with its poor breathability, the accumulated water will gather at the bottom of the pot. And the large number of osmanthus roots will be submerged in the accumulated water at the bottom of the pot, thereby causing root suffocation, and over time the roots will be suffocated and root rot will appear. Everyone knows that when root rot appears in flowering plants, it is rather troublesome: at best it may cause undesirable phenomena such as drooping and hanging branches and leaves, wilting and leaf drop, and at worst it may cause death.
Therefore, we generally do not recommend using porcelain pots to grow osmanthus in pots, since after all their breathability and water permeability are really too poor. We should not simply pursue the beauty of the pot and ignore the adverse effects on the plant's growth. We generally recommend using clay tile pots with very good permeability to grow flowering plants like osmanthus that fear waterlogging and cannot tolerate waterlogging, except that clay tile pots do not look quite so exquisite in appearance. Of course, we can also take both beauty and permeability into account, and adopt this kind of method, that is, using ceramic pots or purple clay pots to grow osmanthus, which is also not bad.
