(Continued from the previous article) "A very important part of life education is paying attention to the interaction between people and the environment," says Zhang Huizhi, principal of Sanxing Junior High School, with great enthusiasm, adding that being a teacher is something he is interested in, not just a job to make a living. Eight years ago in Yilan, he launched the "Life Education Exploratory Experience Course" program, holding cycling, bodyboarding, tree climbing, river tracing, slacklining, canoeing, paintball and other activities every year. From planning the content to applying for funding, he handles everything himself, allowing junior high and elementary schools across the county to sign up freely.

The capacity for life exploration slowly accumulated. Over eight years, the teachers and students who have taken part in the activities span 100 schools in the county, and popular activities are almost "snapped up" the moment they are announced. On this foundation, this year happened to coincide with the Chinese Taipei Surfing Association and the Yilan Youth Mission voluntarily providing instructors to help, so Zhang Huizhi decided to organize a larger-scale surfing course, setting a first in Yilan's education history, with a total of 15 schools (note) integrating surfing skills and water safety knowledge into formal courses.

"I encourage children to look outward, and I hope that through outdoor courses I can activate different functions and possibilities in children." Zhang Huizhi, himself a son of Yilan, says that at least 15 schools will benefit this year, which counts as a beginning; if the program continues to be held afterward, more people will be able to take part.
