Snow Damage Prevention for Greenhouse Flowers

The harm that snowfall causes to greenhouse flowers is multifaceted: First, mechanical damage. Due to the gravitational force of snow, when accumulated snow is too thick, it can often crush greenhouses with weak structures. According to calculations, when the snow accumulation depth is about 20 cm, the snow per square meter can reach 20 kg, and the snow pressure on the roof of a greenhouse per mu can reach over 13 tons. Such a heavy burden is difficult for simple greenhouses with bamboo and wood structures to bear, and damage is very likely to occur. Second, insufficient light. Snowy weather itself has no sunlight, and in addition, to keep the greenhouse warm, several layers of straw mats and other coverings must be added outside the greenhouse, causing severely insufficient light inside and making photosynthesis impossible. Third, freezing damage. As the saying goes: "It is not cold when it snows, but cold when the snow melts." Snowfall is often followed by low temperatures, and improper management can easily cause greenhouse flowers to suffer freezing damage.

Preventive measures: Improve the greenhouse structure. Where conditions permit, greenhouses with reinforced concrete frame structures can be used. If bamboo, wood and plastic pipe frames are used, their load-bearing capacity should be carefully tested, and an arched design should be adopted to enhance support capacity. At the same time, the greenhouse roof should have a certain slope so that snow does not easily accumulate.

Sweep snow promptly. If it snows during the day, cover well with reed mats, and then add straw mats on top; after the snow stops, remove the snow immediately. If it snows at night, sweep the snow promptly the next morning after it stops to keep the coverings dry. When the snow is especially heavy, whether during the day or at night, sweep as it falls to prevent excessive snow accumulation from crushing the greenhouse.

Strengthen the management of coverings. After snow, promptly remove the coverings to let the flowers receive light. If there are consecutive cloudy and snowy days followed by a sudden clearing, after removing the coverings, pay attention to observing changes in the flower seedlings. If wilting is found, immediately cover well with reed mats, uncover again after recovery, cover again if wilting recurs, and repeat this process. After 2 to 3 days, normal management can be resumed.
