Disinfection of Flower Potting Soil

1. Sun-drying and roasting method. For culture substrates such as river sand used in flower seedling cultivation, spread them on a concrete floor before sowing and expose them to strong sunlight for 2 to 3 days, which can kill pathogens and insect eggs.

2. Composting and fermentation method. Mix the potting soil substrate with organic fertilizer and pile it up for composting, then seal it for fermentation, which can kill pathogens and pests.

3. Formalin disinfection method. For each cubic meter of potting soil, spray 400 to 500 milliliters of a 50-fold dilution of 40% formalin, turn and mix evenly, pile it up, and seal it with plastic film for 48 hours.

4. Carbon dioxide disinfection method. Pile the potting soil into a cone or rectangular shape, insert several holes at certain intervals on top, inject 3.5 grams of carbon dioxide per cubic meter of potting soil into the holes, then plug the holes with soil, cover with film, and seal for 48 to 72 hours.

5. Chloropicrin disinfection method. Form the potting soil into blocks 30 to 40 cm high, and at 20 cm intervals, use a wooden stick to make holes 20 cm deep, inject 5 milliliters of chloropicrin into each hole, seal the openings with soil, then water, and cover tightly with film for 15 to 20 days. Remove the film and turn and mix thoroughly and evenly; this both sterilizes and kills insects.

6. Potassium permanganate disinfection method. For flower seedbeds used for sowing and cuttings, after turning the soil, forming the bed, and preparing the ground, drench thoroughly with a 0.1% to 0.5% potassium permanganate solution, cover and seal the soil with film for 2 to 3 days, and after removing the film, drain slightly before sowing or taking cuttings. This can kill pathogens in the soil and prevent rot disease and damping-off disease. (Source: Jilin Agricultural Network)
