The pineapple lollipop is very sweet, but A-Yuan's wish tastes sour
The Golden Diamond pineapple is delicately sweet, no question about it, but growing high-quality pineapples is no simple matter. A-Yuan of Longquan Village, Neipu Township, Pingtung County, stuck with growing pineapples for ten years even when his family was skeptical or outright opposed, and he has grown pride and confidence from it. In recent years, he and his wife have also run a free pineapple-field "treasure hunt" that gives more people the chance to go into the fields and harvest pineapples, experiencing how crops grow and how hard farmers work.
But faced with fragmented farmland that is hard to acquire, or the predicament of finally clearing good land only to have the landlord sell it after just two years of planting, A-Yuan always feels anxious. He says, "All I can do is make a wish now and then, hoping I'll come across someone renting out land again, and beg heaven to let me have more land where I can grow pineapples with peace of mind."
