Taitung Environmental Protection Bureau recommends a good way to conserve water resources: aquaponics is becoming popular

The Taitung County Environmental Protection Bureau recently held the "2019 Taitung County Water Environment Watch and Assistance Patrol Team Education and Training Activity," and invited water environment watch and assistance patrol teams from across the county to take part. Registration for the event was enthusiastic, with nearly 100 volunteers participating. A visit to an aquaponics farm in the Luye area was arranged, and the volunteers came away deeply impressed by water resource conservation, which can let everyone eat with peace of mind.

Taitung's first aquaponics farm began development in the Luye area. In this education and training activity, all the volunteers, under the arrangement of the Environmental Protection Bureau, visited the aquaponics farm in the Luye area. Through the farm manager's detailed explanation, the volunteers understood the main operating model of aquaponics and the reasons it is environmentally friendly. After the class, the manager led the volunteers into the aquaponics farm to see the abundant results of this farming method. One volunteer who serves as a neighborhood warden in the Taitung area said that when there is an opportunity, they want to arrange for local residents to come visit together again, so that everyone can understand the benefits of aquaponics for the environment.

Farm manager Mr. Lin Ming-huang said that aquaponics is the most environmentally friendly farming model. Through water circulation, fish waste becomes plant nutrients, and the fish can effectively keep vegetable cultivation free of chemical fertilizers. Water is used only in the siphon phenomenon of vegetable cultivation, making this method very water-saving, electricity-saving, organic and environmentally friendly. Its principle is a model that combines aquaculture and hydroponics, promoting multiple forms of symbiosis and coexistence. Although the market price of vegetables produced by aquaponics is still high at present, it is hoped that in the near future, with large numbers of farmers participating in this farming method, every member of the public will be able to taste safe, non-toxic vegetables while also protecting our environment.
