How to Grow Lucky Bamboo: Cultivation Methods for Lucky Bamboo

Lucky Bamboo is also known as Silver Queen. Its leaves are beautiful in color and it is particularly shade-tolerant; as a potted plant accenting a room, the effect is striking, especially bright and comfortable. Using its cut leaves as foliage in flower arrangements or to decorate outdoor environments has become fashionable. Lucky Bamboo has a unique air-purifying effect, and many people place one or two plants at home; besides their decorative role, they also purify the air. So how do you grow Lucky Bamboo? Today the editor will introduce the cultivation methods for Lucky Bamboo.

1. How to Grow Lucky Bamboo

It likes a warm, humid, partially shaded environment. For pot cultivation, loose, fertile, humus-rich, well-drained slightly acidic soil is suitable. It is not cold-tolerant; the overwintering temperature is 5°C to 8°C. The leaves need frequent misting, and the potting soil should be kept moist at all times. It is mainly propagated by cuttings, which root very easily at 25°C, and can also be divided. Lucky Bamboo adapts very well to indoor environments; it can be grown in pots or placed in vases, and it keeps growing and stays evergreen for a long time. Common famous varieties include: Java Aglaonema, with a short stem, branching at the base, ovate leaves with white spots and white veins. Spotted Aglaonema, shrub-like, with irregular bright green or grayish-white markings on the leaf surface. Yellow-spotted Aglaonema, with a white stem bearing green streaks and branches. The leaf surface has irregular yellow-brown markings, and the spathe is greenish-white. These three Aglaonema varieties are not cold-tolerant, and the suitable overwintering temperature should not be lower than 18°C.

2. How to Care for Dieffenbachia?

Dieffenbachia leaves bear many irregular white or pale yellow spots, with vivid coloration, and are green all year round.

Water: It likes moisture. Water more in summer, but avoid waterlogging, and mist the leaves frequently. Reduce watering in winter. It must not be exposed to rain during the flowering period.

Fertilizer: It has low fertilizer requirements. Apply base fertilizer when repotting; generally no additional fertilizing is needed.

Soil: It is highly adaptable, but loose, well-aerated, slightly acidic loam is most suitable.

Temperature: In northern regions it needs to overwinter indoors; in the Jiangnan region it can overwinter outdoors, and above 5°C no cold damage will occur.

Light: It likes semi-shade and dislikes direct sun exposure. Indoors, place it in a ventilated spot with indirect light.

Propagation: Division propagation. In early spring, separate the suckering shoots and plant them together with the roots; they survive easily. Sowing is also possible, but generally not used. Division can be done together with repotting; generally repot once a year, dividing the clustered plant into several clumps for separate cultivation, and divide once every 3 years.
