How to grow mini water lilies? Cultivation methods and precautions
Mini water lilies are precious aquatic flowers. They look similar to lotus flowers, but the difference is that lotus leaves and flowers rise above the water surface, while water lily leaves and flowers float on the water surface. Mini water lilies are known as the "sleeping beauty among flowers" because they open by day and close by night. Below, let us look at the question of how to grow mini water lilies.
How to grow mini water lilies
1. Choose good cultivation soil:
Mini water lilies like humus-rich, fertile, clayey soil. Therefore, for cultivation it is best to choose silt that has accumulated in rivers or ponds over a long period.
2. Choose good seed rhizomes:
Mini water lilies are mostly cultivated by division. Choosing good seed rhizomes is also a key part of successful cultivation. For the underground rhizome used as seed, choose a section that is vigorous and robust, virus-free, undamaged, not rotten, and has new buds, then cut it into sections 6-10 cm long.
3. Plant appropriately shallowly:
If the underground stem used for planting mini water lilies is buried too deeply in the mud, first, the soil temperature is relatively low, and second, oxygen is scarce, which is not conducive to early growth and rapid development. The cultivation depth is generally kept at a moderate level when the new buds on the underground stem are level with the soil surface.
4. Sufficient light:
Mini water lilies like a climate with ample sunlight, warmth and humidity, and good ventilation. Mini water lilies grown in pots or tubs must be placed in a position with sufficient light so they receive full sunlight.
5. Water conditions:
Mini water lilies like to grow in relatively calm water bodies without large waves or strong currents, so planting them in artificial fountain pools with high-pressure water columns or in pools with rapid waterfalls often leads to poor growth. The suitable water depth for growing mini water lilies varies with different varieties.
6. Prune dead leaves:
In hot seasons, pay attention to keeping the water in the pot clean. After flowering, promptly cut off dead leaves, leaf stalks, and flower stems to prevent nutrient consumption and keep the plant attractive.
7. Mini water lily propagation methods:
1) Rhizome propagation method
Mini water lilies are mainly propagated by rhizomes. At first, plant the mini water lily in a flowerpot, then place it in water. After about a year, the rhizomes of the mini water lily will grow very densely, and then the mini water lily can be propagated by dividing the rhizomes. First remove the soil from the rhizome part, cut the root hairs short, cut the horizontally growing rhizome together with stems and leaves into sections of about 10 cm, then put bottom sand and fertilizer into the pot, place the stem sections in, cover with a layer of soil and firm it, water timely, and then wait for growth.
2) Division propagation method
When planting, the growing point of the mini water lily can be exposed slightly above the water surface or higher than the pot rim. Once planted, immediately place it in water. In the water, the mini water lily needs to be secured and a certain water depth maintained. When growing mini water lilies, once they reach a certain stage, they need to be propagated by division, and they need frequent fertilization to ensure sufficient nutrients, and the water quality must be clear.
