The effects and actions of tree peony bark

The effects of tree peony bark

Clears heat; invigorates blood and disperses stasis. It mainly treats warm-heat diseases with heat entering the blood level; skin eruptions; vomiting blood and nosebleeds; fever in the later stage of infectious disease with heat lurking in the yin level; yin deficiency with steaming bone tidal fever; blood-stasis amenorrhea; dysmenorrhea; carbuncles, swellings, sores and toxins; traumatic injuries and pain; and wind-damp-heat impediment. Used for warm-toxin skin eruptions, hematemesis and epistaxis, night fever with morning cooling, anhidrotic steaming bone fever, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, carbuncles, swellings, sores and toxins, and traumatic injuries and pain.

①"Shennong Bencao Jing": Mainly treats cold and heat, wind-stroke with spasms and twitching, convulsions, seizures and convulsive disorders caused by pathogenic qi, removes hard masses and blood stasis retained in the stomach and intestines, calms the five zang organs, and treats carbuncles and sores.

②"Bielu": Removes seasonal qi headache, guest heat and the five taxations, taxation qi with headache and low back pain, wind lockjaw, and manic disorder.

③"Yaoxing Lun": Treats cold qi, disperses various pains, and treats menstrual obstruction in women and blood dripping with low back pain.

④"Rihuazi Bencao": Removes pathogenic qi, improves complexion, opens the joints, interstices and blood vessels, discharges pus, promotes menstruation, disperses blood stasis from trauma, joins broken bones and tendons, removes wind impediment, induces abortion and expels the placenta, and treats all cold and hot blood-qi conditions after childbirth.

⑤"Zhenzhu Nang": Treats accumulated blood in the stomach and intestines, epistaxis, hematemesis, and anhidrotic steaming bone fever.

⑥"Diannan Bencao": Breaks blood, moves blood, disperses abdominal masses and diseases, and removes heat from the blood level.

⑦"Yixue Rumen": Drains latent fire, nourishes true blood and qi, and breaks up bindings and accumulations.

⑧"Gangmu": Harmonizes blood, generates blood, and cools blood. Treats latent fire in the blood and removes vexing heat.

The actions of tree peony bark

1. Effects on the cardiovascular system: tree peony bark can increase coronary blood flow, reduce cardiac output, and decrease left ventricular work in anesthetized dogs. It has a clear protective effect on experimental myocardial ischemia, and the effect lasts a relatively long time, while also reducing myocardial oxygen consumption.

2. Effects on the central nervous system: paeonol has an antipyretic effect on fever in mice induced by oral typhoid and paratyphoid vaccine, and lowers the body temperature of normal mice. Oral paeonol can inhibit the writhing response induced by intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid and the tail-pressure pain response in mice, and can counteract caffeine-induced hyperactivity in mice, significantly prolong sleep time induced by sodium cyclobarbital in mice, cause loss of the righting reflex in mice at large doses, and clearly counteract convulsions induced by pentylenetetrazol, strychnine, nicotine, and electroshock. The site of action is in the midbrain reticular formation and thalamus.

3. Anti-inflammatory effect: intragastric administration of paeonol inhibits paw edema in rats induced by dextran, acetic acid, or carrageenan, and can inhibit the increased capillary permeability in the mouse abdominal cavity or guinea pig skin induced by acetic acid or 5-hydroxytryptamine, and inhibit the occurrence of stress ulcers in mice.

4. Antibacterial effect: in vitro experiments show that tree peony bark decoction has relatively strong antibacterial effects against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus, hemolytic Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, and Vibrio cholerae. Tree peony leaf decoction has a significant antibacterial effect against Shigella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, and its active ingredient is gallic acid.

5. Anticoagulant effect: in an in vitro human platelet test, it was found that the water extract of tree peony bark and paeoniflorin both inhibit the production of thromboxane A2 from arachidonic acid in platelets, thereby inhibiting platelet aggregation. This is the result of inhibiting the cyclooxygenase reaction from arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2. The methanol extract of tree peony bark has an inhibitory effect on experimental thrombosis induced by endotoxin.

6. Effects on the immune system: when mice were given tree peony bark, paeonol, paeoniflorin, oxidized paeoniflorin, and benzoyl paeoniflorin by gavage respectively, all promoted the clearance rate of intravenously injected carbon particles in the blood, and also promoted it even when the mononuclear phagocyte system function was in a depressed state. Microscopic examination showed enhanced phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells in the liver and macrophages in the spleen.

7. Effects on lipid metabolism: tree peony bark and its contained paeonol and paeoniflorin have an inhibitory effect on adrenaline-induced lipolysis in fat cells; the water extract of tree peony bark can increase glucose conversion into fat in fat cells, and significantly increases insulin-induced glucose conversion into fat.

Medication contraindications

(1) Use with caution in those with blood deficiency and cold, pregnant women, and those with excessive menstruation.

(2)"Bencao Fengyuan": Do not use in those with profuse spontaneous sweating, because it can drain body fluids. Do not use at the early stage of smallpox or measles, because its nature specifically disperses blood, and there is concern that it may cause the root and base to spread widely.

(3)"Depei Bencao": Do not use in those with deficiency-cold of stomach qi and decline of ministerial fire.
