What is citronella geranium

First let us briefly understand what citronella geranium is. Citronella geranium, scientific name Pelargonium graveolens L'Herit, is a plant in the Geraniaceae family, genus Pelargonium. The plant's stems are about 80 to 90 cm tall, its base is woody, densely covered with glossy soft hairs, and its leaves have long stalks, with a slightly broad heart-shaped ovate form. It has flowers, and its flowering period is around May to July each summer. When citronella geranium blooms, the flowers densely form small umbel inflorescences, and the flower color is rose or pink, looking quite beautiful and lovely. The biggest feature of citronella geranium is that the plant can give off a fragrance, and this fragrance can repel mosquitoes.

Does citronella geranium work

Citronella geranium is a relatively special plant. It is understood to contain a medicinal component called citronellal, which has certain medicinal value. During the growth process of citronella geranium, this component makes it give off a scent similar to lemon fragrance, and this fragrance can strongly stimulate nearby mosquitoes, causing them to flee everywhere and achieving a mosquito-repelling effect. However, it is worth noting that the scent given off by citronella geranium at first is relatively light, and later, as the plant grows or the temperature rises, the fragrance becomes more obvious. Some people who are not used to this fragrance may experience adverse symptoms such as headache, nausea, or itchy skin, so generally citronella geranium should not be planted in too large a quantity.

How much is a pot of citronella geranium

Nowadays the number of people troubled by mosquitoes is very large, so there are quite a lot of potted citronella geraniums on the market. However, interestingly, the plant itself is not very valuable, so the market price of citronella geranium is still very low. Under normal circumstances, the price of one pot of citronella geranium is about 8 yuan to 15 yuan. But the market is unpredictable, and sometimes the price of citronella geranium fluctuates greatly. For example, in midsummer, the price of this plant rises a lot, and some citronella geraniums may even sell for around several tens of yuan. For example, a pot of citronella geranium about the size of a palm may be priced at around 15 yuan or 20 yuan.

In addition, the price of potted plants is also greatly related to the size of the pot and the plant variety. Citronella geranium is a relatively special plant. Besides these factors, its mosquito-repelling effect is also an important reason affecting its price. For example, on the market, citronella geraniums with larger pot sizes, more leaves, and a strong scent with an obvious mosquito-repelling effect are relatively more expensive, usually around 30 yuan to 50 yuan. However, everyone should know that the scent of citronella geranium is not better the stronger it is. When purchasing, you should fully consider whether you can tolerate this scent before making a choice; that way the effect may be better.

Conclusion: The abundance of mosquitoes in summer is something that irritates everyone, and citronella geranium indeed has a certain mosquito-repelling effect, and its price is also very cheap. However, when purchasing, everyone still needs to consider carefully.
