How to Grow Hyacinths in Soil

Do you know how to grow hyacinths in soil? If you want to learn, take a look at the introduction below!

How to Grow Hyacinths in Soil

If the bulbs you bought have already grown roots and leaves, and you prefer growing them in soil as potted plants, you can still choose the potted method now.

1. Select healthy bulbs and plant them in loose potting soil.

2. For the potting soil, you can choose a mixed medium of peat + perlite.

3. The top 1/3 of the bulb should be exposed above the potting soil, as this is more favorable for bulb root growth.

4. After planting, place it in a sunny spot and keep the potting soil moist. The temperature required for forcing blooms is 5°C-10°C. Also note that hyacinths need plenty of light and water; insufficient light, or prolonged dryness in winter, will both lead to poor flowering. If you see that the emerging flower stem is too short to elongate, you can place the potted plant 1 in a dark place for several days to encourage the stems and leaves to grow leggy, and once the flower stem extends, return it to normal care. Hyacinths come in colors such as pink, purple-red, lilac, white, yellow and peach, and the growing method is the same.

Key Points for Cultivating and Managing Hyacinths

Habits: It likes sun and is relatively cold-tolerant. It is suited to growing in a cool, moist environment and in loose, fertile sandy soil, and dislikes waterlogging.

1. Bulb Selection

The nutrients hyacinths need for flowering come mainly from nutrients stored in the scale leaves of the bulb. Only by choosing bulbs with undamaged skins, fleshy scales that are not excessively shrunken, and that are fairly hard, heavy and plump, can you get abundant, beautiful flowers.

2. Soil Requirements

The soil should be fertile, high in organic matter, with good aggregate structure, and a pH of 6-7. You can prepare potting soil in a ratio of 5 parts leaf mold : 3 parts garden soil : 1.5 parts coarse sand : 0.5 part bone meal. Before planting, you can use chemical agents such as formalin: at a soil temperature of 10-15°C, apply the agent to the soil surface and immediately cover with plastic film. In warm weather, after 3 days remove the film, let it air for 1 day, then plant and keep the soil moist.

3. Water

During the growing period and flowering period, keep it moist.

4. Fertilizer

No fertilizer is needed during the flowering period. Apply topdressing once before flowering and once after flowering, and apply sufficient base fertilizer before planting in pots.

5. Light

Hyacinths need only above 5000Lx to maintain normal physiological activity. Too weak light will lead to weak, spindly plants, overly long stems, small flower buds, early flower fading and yellowing leaves; you can use an incandescent lamp about 1 m away for supplemental light. But too strong light can also cause scorching of leaves and petals or shorten the flowering period.

Moving them indoors during the flowering period and avoiding strong light can make the flowers last longer. To grow hyacinths well, if conditions allow, it is best to place them for 3-4 hours a day by a bright east-, south- or west-facing window.

6. Temperature and Humidity Regulation

It is relatively cold-tolerant and dislikes dry heat. If the temperature is too high, even above 35°C, flower bud differentiation will be inhibited, growth will become deformed, and the rate of blind flowers will increase; if the temperature is too low, the flower buds will suffer frost damage.

Soil humidity should be kept between 60% and 70%. If too high, root respiration is inhibited and the roots rot easily; if too low, the aboveground parts wilt and may even die. Air humidity should be kept at around 80%, and humidity can be increased by misting and sprinkling water on the ground, or reduced by measures such as ventilation.

That is all for today's introduction on how to grow hyacinths in soil. I hope the above content can help everyone!
