3. Establishment of the mother stock nursery and the cutting nursery
For a long time, flower growers have mostly relied on self-propagation, consistently following the method of taking middle side shoots from mother plants in the cutting field for propagation. Seedlings have been reused for many generations, causing a decline in seedling quality. The quality of the seedlings directly affects the vigor of the field plants after planting and the subsequent yield and quality of the flowers. Therefore, during cultivation, a mother stock nursery and a cutting nursery should be established, with the following techniques:
Carnation
1. Seedbed preparation. Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) are fibrous-rooted plants and require loose, well-aerated soil that retains water and fertilizer well for growth; the seedbed soil is best made of peat or other media mainly composed of peat; sufficient fertilizer should be added into the medium, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and some trace elements; three days before planting, water heavily to fully moisten the soil; the medium thickness should be at least 20 cm to ensure the carnation mother plants have enough soil layer to grow roots, absorb nutrients and develop and grow normally; the seedbed or bed surface should be built according to the specifications of the greenhouse or shed; the height of the seedbed is suitable at 80-100 cm, and the depth of the seedbed is best at 25-30 cm, and must not be less than 20 cm;
2. Introducing mother plants. Select varieties according to market requirements and the local cultivation ecological environment, introduce excellent varieties with high yield, superior quality, robust growth, strong disease resistance and good stress resistance, and carefully tend them according to the characteristics of each variety; then take healthy cuttings and root them by cuttings to obtain high-quality strong seedlings, build a cutting nursery and produce commercial seedlings; 3. Mother stock nursery cultivation.
① Rain shelter. To ensure robust growth of the seedlings, using plastic greenhouses for rain-shelter cultivation of the carnation mother stock nursery and cutting nursery is a very good measure.
② Density. Its planting density has a great relationship with cutting yield; choosing a reasonable cultivation density is conducive both to ventilation and light penetration for the plants and to forming a high-yielding population structure and increasing effective branches; a density of about 50 plants per square meter is generally adopted; when planting carnations, the principle of planting as shallowly as possible without falling over should be grasped; after planting, water well and sufficiently to soak the roots, so that the root system fully contacts the soil; if planted too deep, stem rot is likely to occur.
③ Field management. A large number of white roots growing from the base indicates that the mother plants have survived, and at this point moisture should be gradually controlled to ensure a well-developed root system; every 7-10 days, apply fertilizer once according to the condition of the seedlings, and spray an insecticide and a fungicide once; when the plant grows to 7 leaves and 1 heart, pinching can begin; depending on the branching ability of different varieties, leave 5-7 pairs of leaves to prepare for later side branch cutting; normally it is generally not used for seedling raising, and can be used as tissue culture material for rejuvenation and seed preservation; when the side branches grow to 7 leaves and 1 heart, cutting can begin; generally leave 3-4 pairs of leaves on the mother plant, and bind cuttings in bundles of 25-30 stems each with rubber bands, place them in cardboard boxes or plastic boxes, and store them in a 1-2°C cold storage for later use.
Root them by cuttings to obtain high-quality strong seedlings, build a cutting nursery and produce commercial seedlings; 3. Mother stock nursery cultivation.
