Can Epiphyllum Be Eaten?

Can Epiphyllum be eaten? Many people only know it as a fleeting bloom, gone in an instant, but when it comes to whether it can be eaten, many are still in the dark. Today, let us answer that question for you.
An Introduction to Epiphyllum
"A fleeting epiphyllum bloom" - we hear this phrase often. The plant it comes from, Epiphyllum, belongs to the Cactaceae family, genus Epiphyllum. In summer and autumn, late at night when all is quiet, the epiphyllum comes into bloom.

1. It is called epiphyllum, and also Qionghua, Beauty Under the Moon, Qionghua, Beauty in the Moonlight, and more. Every name is so lovely and full of poetry. Each plant grows about 1-2 m tall, with an upright main stem that is cylindrical in shape. Irregular branches grow on the stem, and the leaves at the stem joints are green and flat in shape. However, the edges of the stem joints are wavy or concave, and bear no thorns. The flowers grow from small areoles on the edges of the stem segments, about 25-30 cm long and 10 cm wide, white when in bloom. The flowering period is between July and August, and in winter it must be grown in a greenhouse.
2. Why did it become a symbol of fleeting bloom? When the epiphyllum flowers, the blooms are large and beautiful, but it does not bloom during the day; it only opens after eight or nine at night, and remarkably, it stays open for only 3-4 hours, very brief indeed. What leaves a deep impression about the epiphyllum is also its gorgeous, moving posture when in bloom, but within a few hours it closes its corolla and the flower withers quickly, so people describe things that vanish quickly as "a fleeting epiphyllum bloom." In fact, the reason its bloom is so short is related to the climate of its place of origin. It grows in the tropical deserts of Mexico, where the high temperatures before eight or nine at night and the low temperatures after midnight are both unfavorable for flowering. To reduce water loss and survive, it gradually developed the habit of flowering for a short time at night.

3. Its living environment. Epiphyllum prefers a warm, humid and semi-shaded environment. It is not tolerant of frost and cannot be exposed to strong sunlight, or it will die. Generally, for it to grow healthily, attention should be paid to temperature. Between March and September, it should be kept in an environment of 13-19°C; from September to December, 12-18°C should be maintained; from December to March of the following year, the epiphyllum should be kept at 10-16°C; in particular, note that in winter it must not go below 0°C. At the same time, give the epiphyllum fertile, well-drained sandy soil and maintain air humidity.
Beautiful flowers are always so captivating. The value of the epiphyllum lies in its beauty and even more in its preciousness. If you want to admire the brief epiphyllum bloom, you must cultivate it carefully.

How Epiphyllum Fits into Home Decor Styles
One important reason we love flowers is that they can bring a different kind of beauty to the home. How can we cleverly use epiphyllum to create an atmosphere and dress up the home?
1. If your home has a windowsill in a good spot, you can make full use of it. On a windowsill decorated with European-style curtains, place a finely potted epiphyllum, and the whole feeling becomes different. The splendor and nobility of European curtains, paired with the especially precious epiphyllum, make it stand out remarkably. Chinese-style curtains, on the other hand, give quite another feeling: light-colored fabric, with a small pot of epiphyllum placed upon it, relaxing the mood and feeling very harmonious.
2. Friends who love flowers can choose to turn the balcony at home into a small garden. Flowers of various colors and lush green foliage plants can complement one another to form a complete floral picture. The epiphyllum can be placed in a prominent position among them; even if it does not bloom during the day, its posture still catches the eye. When it blooms at eight or nine at night, looking out from the home toward the balcony, one large, beautiful flower after another trembles in the wind, gorgeous yet not garish, with a faint delicate fragrance drifting on the breeze. That scene is precious and brief, yet it instantly gives the home a feeling of elegance.

3. If there is a study at home, the epiphyllum is also a great plant for decorating it. The common style of modern studies is simple and practical. We can choose brown rattan furniture, letting the fresh study reveal a hint of nostalgia. In this way, use a small woven rattan basket to hold a small pot of epiphyllum and place it on the desk, so you can admire the beautiful epiphyllum while studying.
Of course, there are many other ways to pair epiphyllum with home decor; that is for everyone to explore.
Can Epiphyllum Be Eaten?
It is the season when epiphyllum blooms. Besides enjoying its fragrance, some families who grow this flower, based on experience, often like to collect freshly opened epiphyllum blooms and stew them into soup for their children to drink. Eating epiphyllum has certain benefits for tuberculosis patients, but this medicinal use is not yet employed in clinical practice. Because the epiphyllum's flowering period is short, it is also less polluted. Pick one or two flowers, wash them clean, add an appropriate amount of rock sugar and stew for 15 minutes before eating, but it should not be eaten in excess.

Epiphyllum Jelly
Method: To eat epiphyllum, put the epiphyllum and agar together in a pot and simmer until the epiphyllum has completely dissolved, then add rock sugar, and let it cool. Epiphyllum jelly is especially delicious after being chilled. It is said that epiphyllum jelly also has the effect of treating asthma.
Additionally:
Medicinal method: Take fresh epiphyllum and wash it clean with water, put it in a bowl, add rock sugar and steam for 1 hour, take it out and let it cool before eating. It clears heat and moistens the lungs, and has a very good effect on persistent coughing.
Soup method: Wash fresh epiphyllum clean with water and dry it in the air for later use. When making soup, soak it open again with water and tear it into pieces; it can be stewed together with pork ribs or free-range chicken, fresh and delicious.
Some people also stir-fry it directly with sliced meat.
