Daily care methods for Gerbera daisies

Gerbera daisies, with their brilliant colors, have become the top choice for fresh cut flowers in home vases. So how should we care for Gerbera daisies at home? Let's take a look together!

The Gerbera daisy is a beautiful plant with an excellent effect when used for home decoration. Potted Gerbera daisies are often used to decorate doorways and halls, while their cut flowers are used in vases, flower arrangements, and to adorn desks, display windows, and living rooms. With pink Gerbera daisies as the main flower, paired with Dendrobium, baby's breath, and orchid leaves, the color tone is elegant and the ambiance is rich.

If red Gerbera daisies are used as the main flower, paired with sword ferns, palm bamboo leaves, dried branches, and dyed walnuts for wall-hanging decoration, a strong decorative effect can be achieved. Meanwhile, the Gerbera daisy is also known as the Barberton daisy and is native to southern Africa. With large flowers and beautiful colors, it is a delightful sight and an important cut flower decoration material. Large red Gerbera daisies are used for bridal bouquets. Along with roses, gladioli, and carnations, they are listed among the world's best-selling "four major cut flowers."

Gerbera daisies can gauge whether the indoor environment is good or bad. Gerbera daisies are light-loving plants, so choose a location with ample sunlight for cultivation. Seedlings should not be planted too deep; the root buds need to be exposed above the soil surface. If light is insufficient, the flower stems become soft and drooping, and cut flower quality is poor. From the growth of Gerbera daisies, one can judge whether a fake pipeline is adequate.

Gerbera daisy care

1. Pot and soil: The pot does not need to be too large. Use 18cm for large plants, 15cm for medium ones, and 12cm for mini varieties. The soil must be well-ventilated and well-draining. Peat : perlite = 2:1, or use other media as substitutes. Commercially available potting soil with peat as the main ingredient also works, such as Cuiyun and others.

2. Light: The more, the better. For example, I currently only have an east-facing enclosed balcony. 4 hours of direct sunlight per day is the minimum for normal growth and flowering of Gerbera daisies. If petunias can grow normally without becoming leggy, then Gerbera daisies will have no problem.

3. Water: Contrary to light, water supply should be appropriately limited. Newly purchased mature plants should not be watered hastily. You can frequently touch the leaves with your hand; if they are firm, they do not need water. Slightly soft but not wilted is the best time to water. At this point, most of the potting soil is still dry, so you can water thoroughly immediately. Within half an hour, touch the leaves again; they should have become firm. This indicates normal root function (very strong water absorption), which distinguishes it from plants with root rot that often wilt and do not show rapid improvement after watering (in such cases, the more wilted they are, the more people water them, and the more they water, the worse the root rot becomes, leading to plant death). When watering, be careful not to let fertilizer water get into the leaf center, especially not onto the flower buds, as this may cause the buds to rot and increase the possibility of stem rot.

4. Fertilizer: It should be sufficient and balanced. Like other herbaceous plants, if you want them to grow strong, use fertilizers with balanced nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, such as Biwang, Huaduoduo No. 1, or any other organic or chemical fertilizers used in reasonable combination. For mature plants, use high-phosphorus and high-potassium fertilizers to promote flowering, such as Bikaihua, Huaduoduo No. 2, monopotassium phosphate, flowering liquid fertilizers, etc. Before planting, you can add sufficient base fertilizer; cake fertilizer, chicken manure, and bone meal all work, and mixing them is best. Do not use too much nitrogen fertilizer, otherwise the leaves will be thick and large and crowded together like leafy greens, affecting flower bud development.

How to care for Gerbera daisies in a vase

1. To keep Gerbera daisies, you must prepare three types of vases: tall, medium, and short. Before arranging flowers, make sure the vase is clean and the water is clean. I usually choose purified water from home.

2. Before arranging flowers, I usually use scissors to cut diagonally along the base, cutting off 2 to 3cm to expose a fresh base. This way, when inserted into water, the diagonal surface increases the water-absorbing area and is better for transporting water. Especially for tall-stemmed flowers like this, water transport is most important.

3. Each Gerbera daisy stem has a hard stub at the bottom. The flower shop owner told me this must not be cut off, or the flower will easily rot at the base. At first I listened and did not cut it, and after a few days the flower began to droop. When I took it out to look, the hard stub had tiny pores. How could it transport water that way? So I cut off 2 to 3cm and trimmed it every two or three days.

4. Once the hard stub is cut away and a hollow flower stem appears, the stem at this stage easily rots, so check it at least once a day. If you find a rotten stem, you must mercilessly cut off the rotten part until you cut to a fresh section. This is better for the flower's growth.

5. During the trimming process, be mindful to change the vase at any time according to the height of the flower.

6. In the process of keeping flowers, the most important word is "diligent." Change the water every one or two days. In the later stage, you may need to change the water once a day.

7. Vase flowers should not be exposed to direct sunlight.
