When is the blooming season for morning glories

Morning glory, also called morning glory flower, can grow in any environment and is an annual twining herbaceous flowering plant of the genus Ipomoea in the family Convolvulaceae. Next, let us take a look at the blooming time of morning glories.

The morning glory, an extremely ordinary flower, we called it morning glory flower when we were young. Its flowering period is very long, and it seems to bloom all the way until autumn. In the early morning it trumpets for the rising sun. The petals of various colors are as thin as cicada wings, bright and eye-catching. Seeing it, you will think of Marilyn Monroe's classic pose, sexy and shy, delicate and softly beautiful.

Last autumn I collected a few morning glory seeds, but in spring I could not find a suitable place to plant them. My balcony had already been enclosed, which was not suitable for the growth of flowers and plants. Most areas of the yard were covered with concrete, and the only small place where flowers could be planted had also been planted by neighbors with other flowers and plants. The wish to plant morning glories had to be abandoned.

Fortunately, this flower is very tough and has no high requirements for the environment. With a little soil it can grow, and with a little sunlight it blooms brightly. Whether in a corner of the courtyard or beside the rugged mountain path, there will be morning glories smiling at you, either scattered in clusters on the ground or competing to reach upward one by one. The slender vines cast down emerald green leaves, curling, searching, climbing upward, fearing neither difficulty nor danger; they will not retreat, only move forward.

Disease and pest control for morning glories

The affected parts are mainly leaves, leaf stalks and tender stems. On affected leaves, light green small spots first appear on the leaf surface. Later they gradually turn pale yellow, with indistinct edges. In severe cases they expand into large lesions, and in the later stage white scar-like protrusions appear on the back of the diseased part. When they rupture, white powdery matter is released, which is the sporangia of the pathogen. When tender stems are affected, flowers and stems become distorted. When lesions surround leaf stalks and tender shoots, the host parts above the girdling grow poorly, shrink and die.

Pathogen and disease occurrence pattern

The pathogen is Convolvulus white rust, a fungus of the genus Albugo. The pathogen overwinters in diseased tissues as oospores. The following spring, the oospores germinate and produce sporangia, infecting morning glories and other plants of the family Convolvulaceae. Generally, August to September is the peak period of disease occurrence. Morning glory seeds can carry the fungus and become the source of infection the following year.

Control methods

① Promptly pull out diseased plants and destroy them. This reduces infection of seeds.

② Select and keep disease-free seeds as propagation seeds, and disinfect seeds before sowing. Avoid crop rotation with plants of the family Convolvulaceae.

③ In the early stage of disease occurrence, spray 1% Bordeaux mixture or 50% metalaxyl 500-fold solution, spraying once every 10-15 days for a better control effect.

When do morning glories bloom:

The general flowering period of morning glories is from June to October. Morning glories usually bloom at around 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning, and by about noon the flowers have withered. This is because the flowers of morning glories are large and thin, and the flowers contain abundant water. When sunlight shines on them, the water in the flowers evaporates completely in a relatively short time. If in a cool place, morning glories wither more slowly, and sometimes the flowers are even still open in the afternoon.

The morning glory has a common name, "Qinniangzi", which, as the name suggests, is a very industrious flower. Whenever the rooster has just crowed for the first time, at about 4 or 5 o'clock in the morning, the morning glory branches winding around fences and frames open one after another with trumpet-like flowers. In the morning light, people breathe the fresh air while enjoying the fresh flowers dotted among the green leaves, which truly has a special charm.
