No humidifier needed for indoor moisture retention - plants are more eco-friendly for humidifying
Hydroponic plants are those that can grow indoors in water alone, without soil. Typically, a transparent container (vase, plastic bottle, etc.) is filled with water, and the plant stems and roots are placed in the water; after roots develop, the roots can be seen - these are indoor potted plants.
I. Classification of hydroponic plants
There are two major categories of hydroponic plants: one is aquatic flowers, such as the lotus and water lily that we are familiar with; the other is flowers that can be grown in water, which normally grow in soil or growing media, such as narcissus and hyacinth. Since indoor light is not sufficient enough, the latter category is more suitable for cultivation. In addition, they have low nutrient requirements and can basically grow in tap water without the need to add nutrient solution.
II. Advantages of hydroponic plants
1. Since water can evaporate freely, in the same environment they play a more obvious role in regulating air humidity than plants grown in potting soil;
2. Hydroponic plants eliminate the management work of potting soil, are clean and hygienic, and are simple to care for;
3. If you choose some plants whose roots can be exposed to light and pair them with a suitable container, the entire plant can be viewed, fresh and elegant, with higher ornamental value.
III. Introduction to hydroponic plants
1. Lucky bamboo
An evergreen upright shrub of the genus Dracaena in the Asparagaceae family (Liliaceae), very suitable for indoor hydroponic flowers. Lucky bamboo has emerald green leaves and straight stems, round like bamboo. The leaves are ovate with pointed tips, and the leaf stalk base clasps the stem. It is an extremely shade-tolerant plant and still grows well, upright and strong, under low-light conditions. It can be placed indoors for long-term foliage viewing without special care; as long as there is enough water, it will grow vigorously. When growing in water, cut the lucky bamboo stem into small sections of more than 20 cm as cuttings and insert them into water; as long as 1/3 of the cutting can be immersed in water, it can grow.
2. Spider plant
A perennial evergreen herbaceous flower of the Asparagaceae family (Liliaceae), with clustered, linear leaves that have longitudinal yellow-white stripes at the edges or in the middle. In summer and autumn, slender, flexible, drooping stolons emerge from between the leaves, and tender leaves and aerial roots sprout at the tips or nodes, bearing white flowers. Spider plants can be grown indoors in water; they not only purify the air but also have a beautiful appearance and are easy to manage. Dig out a potted spider plant, remove the soil from the roots, cut off old roots and rotten roots, keep the fibrous roots, place it in a container bottle, fill the bottle with clean water and flower nutrient solution, and let the spider plant roots grow immersed in water.
3. Devil's ivy
A plant of the genus Philodendron in the Araceae family, belonging to climbing vine foliage flowers. It likes warm, humid environments; the vine can reach several meters long, with aerial roots at the nodes; the leaves grow larger and larger, are alternate, and evergreen. The vine stems are slender and soft, and the leaves are delicate and elegant. Growing it in water is very simple: ensure the water is changed once every 2 to 3 days, with a simple nutrient added. Devil's ivy has high ornamental value; its trailing stems hang down naturally, and it can both purify the air and make full use of space, adding lively lines and bright colors to a dull cabinet surface.
4. Ivy
Of the Araliaceae family, genus Hedera, it is the most ideal variety for indoor and outdoor vertical greening. An evergreen vine, its branches and tendrils are slender and soft, with aerial roots, and it can climb onto other objects. The leaves are alternate, triangular-ovate, and the demand for potted plants is increasing day by day. It is a typical shade plant that can grow in full-light environments and grows well under warm, humid climate conditions, but is not cold-tolerant. Growing it in water is simple, and its vitality is strong.
5. Asparagus fern
Of the Asparagaceae family (Liliaceae), genus Asparagus, it is a perennial evergreen herbaceous flower. The stems are slender and weak, and the branches are fine and leaf-like, spreading horizontally. The flowers are small and white. The berries are spherical and black. After the fruit ripens, it presents a scene of dots of red amid dense green, elegant and lovely. The plant has strong shade tolerance; placed at the bedside or on a desk, it is elegant and graceful, and is a very good indoor flower. Asparagus fern is also an ideal material for setting off cut flowers. In recent years, hydroponic asparagus fern has been successfully developed, and it is even more elegant when placed indoors.
The above five plants are suitable for growing in water. Why not give it a try?
