How to correctly cultivate American red maple saplings

Roots are the foundation of growth for all plants. Only when the roots are healthy can a plant's nutrient supply keep up and allow it to grow strong and healthy. Let's take a look together below.

Factors affecting the survival rate of American red maple saplings

For American red maple cutting seedlings, whether they are container seedlings or bare-root seedlings being transplanted, the key factor affecting the survival rate is mainly the roots. The root system must have obviously strong secondary roots, and it must be dense and thick. With this kind of root system, the survival rate can reach 100%. If the root system is thin and weak, the survival rate is very, very low, even if there are long roots. For American red maple cutting seedlings of the current year, those that grow new branches and whose leaves develop normally have the highest survival rate.

The taller and thicker the new branches that grow, the better. For American red maple cutting seedlings of the current year, those whose newly grown branches reach 0.8 m or more are classified as premium-grade seedlings, which ordinary cutting techniques and cultivation techniques cannot achieve. If only one very thin and weak branch and a few very small leaves of ordinary size grow, this indicates that the root system is very weak and the survival rate will certainly be low.

For American red maple cutting seedlings of the current year that do not grow new branches but have plump terminal buds, the survival rate is not affected much, but the root system must be well developed, otherwise the survival rate will also be poor.

In addition to paying attention to the roots of the saplings, only by carrying out systematic pruning before planting and also pruning regularly after planting can the red maple grow more luxuriantly.

Pruning of American red maple saplings before planting

1. Before planting American red maple nursery stock, the root system and crown of the nursery stock should be pruned. Split, pest-damaged, and excessively long roots must be cut off to ensure the original natural form of the American red maple nursery stock.

2. If the cut (or saw cut) is larger than 2CM, preservative treatment must be carried out.

3. The trunk-setting height for street trees should preferably be 3M. American red maple can be set at more than 2.5M. All side branches below the first branching point should be cut off, and branches above the branching point should be thinned or shortened as appropriate.

4. For tall deciduous trees such as American red maple, the original tree shape should be retained, with appropriate thinning. The retained main and side branches should be shortened at vigorous buds, cutting off 1/5-1/3 of the branches.

5. What needs attention is that if American red maple is planted as a street tree, the most suitable height is around 3M.

Planting of American red maple saplings

Planting and establishing: The tree pit should be dug large, with a diameter one third larger than the root spread of the sapling, and debris such as cinders and lime in the pit should be cleared away to facilitate the tree's rooting and growth. The plant and row spacing should be determined according to the cultivation purpose; the plant and row spacing must be straight and symmetrical, minimizing error; the tree trunk must be vertical from top to bottom and must not lean; when planting bare-root American red maple seedlings, after filling soil to a certain depth, the sapling should be gently pulled upward, then while filling soil, lift it 2-3 times until the sapling reaches the appropriate depth, then tamp the pit soil firmly and water; when planting seedlings with soil balls, first measure whether the depth of the pit matches the height of the soil ball. The backfilled soil should be tamped as it is filled, but the soil ball must not be smashed.

Maintenance and management: Maintenance and management after transplanting American red maple are very important. Generally, it must be watered at least three times, and the watering must be thorough. If insufficient, supplement with more water. Pay attention to earthing up around the roots after watering. After the tree sprouts, if conditions permit, spray water once every 1-2 days to speed up the growth rate of new buds. Also note that new shoots are easily harmed by aphids. During dry weather, observe promptly and spray pesticide. Frequently hoe weeds and loosen the soil. In terms of fertilization, base fertilizer should first be applied at the bottom of the tree pit when digging the pit; after planting, barnyard manure or chemical fertilizer can be applied by trenching or hole application to promote growth.

American red maples are flaming red like a sea. High-quality American red maples can not only be used for garden landscaping, as street trees, and for decorating courtyards, but can also be used for afforestation to form a beautiful maple sea, leaving viewers intoxicated. Therefore, they are very worth planting.
