[American Red Maple Cuttings] How to Carry Out Cutting Propagation of American Red Maple

To ensure the survival rate of American red maple cuttings, both the preparatory work before cutting and the operating methods during cutting require our strict attention.

Preparatory Work Before Cutting American Red Maple

Collecting Scions from Mother Plants: Strengthen water, fertilizer, and pest and disease management for mother plants in the field, with moderate water and fertilizer. Before collecting American Autumn Blaze Red Maple cuttings, water once every 3 days, and apply a topdressing once one month before taking cuttings, averaging 40kg per mu; ensure no pests or diseases to obtain high-quality cuttings; collect semi-lignified young red maple branches as cuttings before sunrise or on cloudy days, keep them moist, and set aside for use.

Cutting Treatment: First rinse the cuttings obtained in step four with tap water, then use a mixture of carbendazim at a quality concentration of 50% and thiophanate-methyl at a quality concentration of 50%, diluted with water to make a 500-fold dilution, and soak and disinfect the American Autumn Blaze Red Maple cuttings for 1Omin, wherein the quality ratio of carbendazim to thiophanate-methyl is 1:1; then trim the cuttings to a length of 4-6cm, retaining 1-3 leaves; next, treat the base of the cuttings 1-2cm with a 5-fold dilution of transplant rooting agent for 1Omin, then keep them moist at 30°C for 5h to induce wound healing of the cuttings, and set aside for use.

Site Selection and Deep Plowing: For the cutting propagation site, it is best to choose flat, highly acidic sandy loam soil; yellow loam and red loam are both very good. On the seedling site, every four raised beds, set up a row of bamboo poles or posts of other materials nearly 2 meters high, with a distance of 2 meters between each post, and pull wire between the posts for later use. The seedling site should be deeply plowed to a depth of 30 cm. After plowing, it is best to sun-dry for 3-5 days before preparing the land.

Soil Treatment: After the cutting ridges are completely prepared, spread a layer of yellow clay 1-2 cm thick on top, spreading it as evenly as possible. Yellow clay has strong cohesion, is fertile, and has the effect of retaining water and fertilizer. Then, prepare 80% carbendazim wettable powder 1000-fold solution and the disease-prevention high-efficiency fungicide 95% fenaminosulf wettable powder 1000-fold solution, mix the two solutions together, and carry out thorough sterilization and disease-prevention treatment on the cutting ridges. Carbendazim is used for seed and soil treatment and has a controlling effect on diseases caused by fungi such as imperfect fungi and ascomycetes in crops. Fenaminosulf has a special effect on diseases caused by Pythium and Aphanomyces. After disinfection and sterilization, air-dry for 1-2 days to let the soil become slightly drier before cutting. During this time, the gardeners go to collect branches.

American Red Maple Cutting Techniques

Cutting Period: The cutting period is mainly based on growing-season cuttings, supplemented by dormant cuttings. Growing-season cuttings: also called leafy cuttings; as long as conditions are met (such as under greenhouse conditions), cutting propagation can be carried out all year round. Under natural humidity conditions, the optimal period for cuttings is from June to September. During this period, most woody flowers have completed their first spring growth, and the cuttings contain more nutrients, which is favorable for survival. Dormant-period cuttings: also called bare-branch cuttings; usually the branches are collected after leaf fall in autumn, stored through the winter, and then cut in March-April of the following spring.

Post-Cutting Management: Cover the cutting pots or seedling beds with plastic film or a cover to maintain a certain humidity and temperature. To avoid direct sunlight causing excessive transpiration of water and leading to leaf wilting and affecting survival, pay attention to shading and place the cutting pots in a shaded place. For water management, spray water in a timely manner according to weather conditions to maintain suitable air temperature. Do not spray too much water, so as to avoid excessively high substrate humidity affecting rooting. After the cuttings have rooted, wait about another half month, then they can be moved out and planted into pots. First place them in a shaded place to recover, and after the root system develops well and the plants are robust, gradually move them to a place with sufficient sunlight and manage them according to routine practices.

Finally, everyone should also be reminded here that if the local temperature is below minus 3°C, it is best not to plant the cutting seedlings during this period. They need to be heeled in before planting, so as to ensure the survival of the American red maple.
