Geranium care techniques
For potted geraniums, the potting soil can be made from leaf mold mixed with an appropriate amount of sandy soil and rice husk ash, then add a small amount of bone meal. Repot once a year and replace with fresh growing medium, which is beneficial for growth and flowering. The best time to repot is from mid-August to early September.
Before repotting, first prune and shape the plant, and wait until the potting soil and cut surfaces are dry before repotting. When repotting, appropriately trim away some of the longer and excessive fibrous roots. Then, every year in mid-to-late April, move it outdoors to a well-ventilated, sunny spot for care.
To keep geraniums blooming continuously, apply dilute decomposed cake fertilizer water frequently, generally once every 10 days. Normally, do not water too much. Otherwise, it will cause the leaves to turn yellow, poor plant growth, and failure to form robust flower buds.
Watering should generally be done when the leaf tips begin to wilt, and once you water, be sure to water thoroughly. From late June to early August, the weather is relatively hot, and geraniums are in a semi-dormant state at this time, so fertilization should be stopped and watering controlled.
High temperatures, direct sunlight, and water accumulation in the pot after rain will all affect the geranium's dormancy, and sometimes may even cause root rot and death. Therefore, during the dormant period, geraniums should be placed on a shaded balcony, windowsill, or in a courtyard spot that avoids light and rain; doing so can also reduce the length of dormancy.
Autumn is the vigorous period of growth and flowering for geraniums. You can combine watering with several applications of decomposed cake fertilizer water to promote flowering. After the flowering period, promptly cut off the flower stalks, old stalks, and old weak branches, or carry out short pruning, to encourage more branching.
