How to Grow the Lipstick Plant and Key Points to Note

The lipstick plant not only has an attractive appearance, but is also a plant that is very helpful for purifying the air in our homes. So what should we pay special attention to when growing the lipstick plant? Let's take a look together~

How to Grow the Lipstick Plant

Soil environment:

For planting the lipstick plant, it is best to choose a well-drained, slightly acidic soil. When planting, you can mix peat soil with sandy soil and a small amount of superphosphate to make a nutrient soil. The lipstick plant likes bright light and a semi-shaded environment, so the ideal position is hanging in a south-facing window indoors; because it is native to the tropics, it likes high temperatures and is not cold-tolerant, with 20°C--26°C being the most suitable temperature for its growth.

Watering and fertilizing:

From March to September each year is the growing season for the lipstick plant. At this time, the potting soil needs to be kept moist, and it should be watered frequently and the leaves sprayed with water, but be careful not to let water accumulate in the pot, to prevent root rot. During the growing season, the lipstick plant should be given a fully decomposed organic liquid fertilizer once every 15--20 days, but note that when entering autumn and winter and the weather turns cold, watering and fertilizing should be reduced.

Disease control:

The lipstick plant has strong vitality and usually does not suffer from diseases, but improper watering can easily cause root rot. In this case, you can spray or drench the diseased plant with a 1000-fold dilution of 40% root rot fungicide; or drench the roots with a 1500-fold dilution of 80% 402 emulsifiable concentrate.

Key Points to Note When Growing the Lipstick Plant

1. Suitable soil: For the lipstick plant, loose and fertile sandy loam is best, and drainage must be good. For potted plants, slightly acidic soil is best. You can use a potting mix made from peat soil, sand and vermiculite, and add an appropriate amount of superphosphate.

2. Light: It likes a semi-shaded environment. Apart from the strong light at midday in midsummer, which should be properly shaded, it should be given sufficient light at other times, especially in winter. If the placement site has too much or too little light, the leaves will easily turn pale green or yellow-green.

3. Temperature: The lipstick plant should be placed in a cool, ventilated place, and care should be taken to maintain environmental humidity. Avoid continuous high temperature and high humidity; poor drainage and ventilation will cause rot. The lipstick plant is not cold-tolerant, and in winter it needs to be brought indoors to overwinter.

4. Watering frequency: The potting soil should be kept moist frequently, and water must never accumulate in the pot, to avoid causing root rot. From March to September, during the peak growing period, the water requirement is relatively high, so it should be watered and misted frequently to increase humidity; in autumn, as the weather gradually turns cool, watering and fertilizing should be gradually reduced. In winter, the potting soil should be slightly dry.

5. Pruning tips: When growth is vigorous, you can properly pinch off the growing tips to promote branching. In winter, after the flowering period, the spent stems that have flowered should be cut off promptly, which can save nutrients, promote new shoots, and make it produce more buds and flowers.
