The flower meaning of cosmos:

The flower meaning of Cosmos bipinnatus represents a maiden's true heart, a maiden's pure and proud extraordinariness; mystery and purity, noble purity, first love, freedom, cheerfulness; eternal happiness.

Cosmos (white): purity

Cosmos bipinnatus (red): passionate

Its scientific name Cosmos comes from Greek, and its original meaning carries positive senses such as universe, harmony, order, honor and good deeds.

Cosmos is regarded by Tibetan people as a holy flower symbolizing love and good fortune. Tibetan people call it Gesang, which means happiness in Tibetan, so it is also called the happiness flower.

Princess Cosmos, the youngest daughter of the Cosmos King. A witch told fortunes and said she would be forever lonely. This was the strongest curse in the Cosmos Kingdom, and no one could break it. So Princess Cosmos lived alone inside the princess castle.

Princess Cosmos spent a very, very long time alone in the castle. Every day the sun rose and the moon set, and it was always just her alone. Loneliness eroded her heart every moment. Especially at night, because the night was always long and hard to get through. She often sat on the swing in the garden at night and wept alone.

In the very end, after a very, very long time, a knight from a faraway place passed by the princess's castle and saw Princess Cosmos alone. It was a splendid encounter. The knight and Princess Cosmos fell in love at first sight, and the two loved each other. The Ferris wheel of happiness descended, and the curse on Princess Cosmos was broken.

There is no prince in this story, because only a brave knight could bring her happiness.

There is a Tibetan legend: no matter who it is, as long as they find an eight-petaled Gesang flower, they have found happiness.

How to grow cosmos

Cosmos is robust, likes sunlight, tolerates drought, and is not strict about soil, but it cannot tolerate waterlogging. If it is planted in fertile soil, it easily causes excessive growth of branches and leaves, affecting flower quality.

When seedlings are 5 cm tall, transplant them. When they have 7--8 leaves, plant them in place. They can also be sown directly and then thinned. If base fertilizer is applied at the planting site, no further fertilization is needed during the growing period. If the soil is too fertile, branches and leaves tend to grow excessively and flowering decreases. Alternatively, during the growing period, apply once every 10 days decomposed urine diluted with 5 times water. In dry weather, water 2-3 times and they can grow and flower well. Those that bloom during the high-temperature period from July to August are not easy to set seed. Seeds fall off easily after maturing, so collect seeds in the early morning. Cosmos is a short-day plant. Spring-sown seedlings often have luxuriant leaves and few flowers, while summer-sown seedlings are shorter, neat, and bloom continuously. It grows quickly and can be pinched back multiple times to increase branching.

Cosmos plants are tall. When planted in windy places, supports should be set up to prevent lodging and breakage. Generally, dwarf plants are mostly cultivated, that is, when seedlings are 20-30 cm tall, remove the top, and then repeatedly remove the new terminal buds several times afterward, and the plant will become dwarfed; at the same time, the number of flowers also increases. The planting bed should be given a little base fertilizer. For seed collection, pick when the achenes turn slightly black, so as to avoid scattering after maturity.
