How do you grow a sago palm, and how much does one cost?

The sago palm has an elegant, well-proportioned shape and fresh, emerald-green leaves, and it pairs well with all kinds of home decor styles, so growing a few sago palms at home is a very good choice.

How to grow a sago palm

Soil: It is best grown in fertile, slightly acidic sandy soil. For the growing medium, you can use 1 part coarse sand with 2 parts garden soil, or 3 parts leaf mold with 1 part fine gravel, or 2 parts sandy soil with 1 part leaf mold, plus a small amount of 0.5% ferrous sulfate (used as a pH adjuster).

Repotting: Repot before new growth emerges in early spring. Small pots should be repotted once every 1 to 2 years, and large pots once every 3 to 4 years. When repotting, you can change the soil without changing the pot, or change both the soil and the pot. Generally, after 2 to 3 years, once the plant is a bit larger, it is moved into a larger pot. When repotting, first tap the rim of the pot with your hand, then hold the leaves and tip the pot sideways to take out the plant with the soil, being careful not to break the leaves.

Watering: During care, keep soil moisture at around 60%, and follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings. In spring and summer, when the leaves grow vigorously, especially in the hot, dry summer climate, water more often, once in the morning and once in the evening, and spray the leaves to keep them fresh and emerald green. After autumn begins, water once every 2 to 5 days.

Light: The sago palm should not be kept indoors for too long, because it loves light. Although a lack of light will not kill it, it will make its new leaves sparse, thin and weak, and lose their green color. Therefore, when growing a sago palm, it needs to be placed in a sunny spot in all four seasons, especially in spring and autumn when it grows new leaves, when it should be kept in direct sunlight, and only after the new leaves have matured should it be moved indoors for display.

Fertilizing: During the sago palm's growing season, apply supplemental fertilizer often, mainly nitrogen and potassium fertilizers, with well-rotted cake fertilizer water being ideal. When fertilizing, apply light fertilizer frequently and never too concentrated. To promote deep green, glossy leaf color, add an appropriate amount of ferrous sulfate solution to the fertilizer. When fertilizing, be sure to apply plenty of vanadium fertilizer water; you can also put some rusty iron in the soil, or buy a special sago palm fertilizer from a flower market, which can make the sago palm's leaves deep green and glossy and increase its ornamental value.

Pruning: The sago palm produces new leaves once or twice every year. When growing a sago palm bonsai, for the sake of a beautiful shape, you should cut off the previous year's old leaves and the yellowed, withered leaves, and also prune overly dense or overly long leaves as needed to keep the tree's shape well balanced.
