I. Cuttings of styled Podocarpus

Prepare the cutting soil: Put the prepared growing medium into a seedling tray, and after exposure to sunlight and drying, turn it over with a trowel and water it at regular intervals. Over time, the potting soil becomes loose and settles well into the tray, with good fertilizer and water retention, making it very suitable for the growth of general species with fine, weak root systems.

Do not damage the roots when transplanting: Before planting, first loosen the potting soil with a small trowel and scoop out one third of the growing medium for later use. Then remove the Podocarpus cutting seedlings, gently shake off excess sandy loam, place the intact root system together with the plant into the pot, add part of the growing medium scooped out from the original pot, water and straighten the plant, then spray water so that the soil and roots bind smoothly together and maintain a good granular structure. Light fertilizer and frequent care: After the cutting seedlings are transplanted into pots, use a spray bottle for watering in daily management, and after 30 days apply a diluted fertilizer solution once. Through routine inspection, identify problems and flexibly control the amount of fertilizer and water supplied. In general, apply more to strong seedlings and less or none to weak seedlings. Styling and pruning of branches: Branch styling includes the selection and removal of branches, adjustment of branch direction, regulation of growth vigor, and correction of spreading posture, etc. Select a Podocarpus whose trunk has a slight curve, cut off weak small branches, some whorled branches, and branches on the lower one third of the trunk, proceeding branch by branch from bottom to top. Keep the thick strong side branch on the upper 1/3 of the trunk as the first main branch. Generally keep 1 branch per layer, and make the first branch on the trunk longer.

Pruning of the crown: Crown pruning is carried out after the basic framework of the Podocarpus is determined, so as to form a dense crown as quickly as possible. During the annual dormant-season pruning, cut off dead branches, diseased branches, parallel branches, and inward-growing branches, etc. During the growing season, pruning can be carried out year-round, and whenever new shoots grow to 10cm, pinch out the growing tips to promote branching.
