Classification Methods and Price Reference for Landscape Tree Species

The choice of landscape tree species is very broad. Below, let us look at how to choose landscape tree species based on their application purposes and plant properties.

I. Application-Based Selection of Landscape Tree Species

Flowerbed seedlings: Showy flowerbeds are mainly composed of ornamental herbaceous flowers, displaying the collective beauty of color when the flowers are in full bloom. Commonly used seedling materials include Salvia splendens, early small chrysanthemum, cockscomb (Celosia), pansy, verbena, marigold, and petunia; pattern flowerbeds are mainly composed of low-growing foliage plants and flowering plants, displaying the complex pattern beauty formed by plant groups.

Flower border seedlings: A flower border is mainly based on perennial and bulbous flowers, combined with annual and biennial herbaceous flowers and flowering shrubs, arranged along garden boundaries or roadside edges as a garden plant landscape, and can also be accented with rocks, ornaments, and so on. In terms of design form, and in terms of plant selection, flower borders can be divided into 5 types: perennial flower borders, bulbous flower borders, shrub borders, mixed borders, and specialized flower borders.

Flower platform seedlings: For plant materials in flower platforms, generally chosen are herbaceous and woody flowers with long flowering periods, small and delicate forms, abundant flowers and dense branches, and easy management; they can also be arranged together with plants of graceful form. Examples include hosta, Aspidistra and Liriope, French marigold, Japanese five-needle pine, plum, Chinese elm, boxwood, bamboo, creeping juniper, and dianthus.

II. Classification of Landscape Tree Species

According to tree type, they can be divided into four major categories: trees, shrubs, vines, and creeping plants;

Trees: Tall tree bodies with obvious tall trunks; they can further be divided into large and small trees, and evergreen and deciduous trees. According to their ornamental characteristics, they can be used as shade trees, street trees, garden landscape trees, specimen trees, scenic forest trees, and so on.

Shrubs: Short tree bodies with low trunks; some have multiple stems growing from the ground with no obvious trunk. They can further be divided into large shrubs and small shrubs, and evergreen and deciduous shrubs, and can be ornamental for flowers, fruits, and leaves. Large shrubs are used to divide spaces, block sightlines, and so on (coral tree); small shrubs are used for hedges, lower-layer garden decoration, or flowerbeds (barberry, red loropetalum), ground cover (June snow), green sculpture (golden leaf privet), and pattern flowerbeds (azalea, red loropetalum).

Vines: Woody plants that can twine around or climb other objects to grow upward; they can further be divided into strangling types, adhesive types (Boston ivy, ivy), tendril types (grape), and trailing-branch types (climbing rose).

Creeping plants: Trunks and branches all grow creeping along the ground; the parts in contact with the ground can produce adventitious roots and expand the area they occupy (creeping juniper).

III. Prices of Landscape Tree Species

Shrubs: There are many varieties of shrubs, with different colors and different height layers, and they are also widely used in greening and landscaping. Among them, the long-flowering "azalea" and the pure and fragrant "gardenia" are the most widely used. Taking spring azalea as an example, for a spread of about 100 cm, the price of purple azalea is about 25 yuan; small-leaf gardenia with a spread of about 100 cm is about 15 yuan.

Trees: Tall tree species are most commonly planted on both sides of roads, such as ginkgo, dragon-claw pagoda tree, plane tree, silk tree, and camphor tree, which are all relatively common. The price of landscape trees is proportional to tree size. Taking a 10 cm radius as the standard, the price of camphor tree is about 130 yuan, plane tree about 120 yuan, ginkgo about 400 yuan, and silk tree about 230 yuan. Japanese cherry is a very popular tree species in recent years, and its price is relatively expensive: for a 12 cm radius, the price is about 1,200 yuan.

Landscape trees are most suitable for decorating courtyards, because they often have relatively high ornamental value. So if there are friends who want to decorate a courtyard, you can refer to the information introduced above and make your own choices and combinations.
