Monosolenium tenerum, a magical plant that can create an underwater atmosphere for a fish tank

Monosolenium tenerum grows at a relatively low height, and its leaves are also fairly small. When arranged in a fish tank, it looks more delicate and can effectively enhance the quality of the tank. However, when cultivating Monosolenium tenerum, you also need to take care to tend it carefully, so that it does not instead become the main culprit that ruins the aquascape.

I. Morphological characteristics of Monosolenium tenerum

Flat, ribbon-like, mostly growing in dense clusters, pale green, 1-6 cm long, 0.5-2 mm wide, with many forked branches. The cross-section is crescent-shaped, and the dorsal epidermis is a single layer of cells; the nutritive tissue is made up of many cells connected into a porous network, with large green cells. The ventral surface has sparsely borne rhizoids and no scales. Monoecious. The antheridia and archegonia are both solitary, enclosed within the thallus. The female involucre is spherical and sessile; when mature, it protrudes toward the ventral surface of the thallus in a spherical shape, with many rhizoids borne on the outside. The spores are yellowish brown, semi-transparent, about 75-90 micrometers in diameter, with reticulate protrusions on the outer wall. Monosolenium tenerum floats on the water surface of ponds or grows on moist soil.

II. Cultivation methods for Monosolenium tenerum

Water quality: The cultivation and planting of Monosolenium tenerum require strong light and sufficient carbon dioxide, and Monosolenium tenerum does not like soft salty water. They are more suitable for growing in water environments with a temperature of 15-30 degrees Celsius, water quality of 5-15 DH, and a pH value between 6.0-8.0. Because Monosolenium tenerum has no roots, it will float up like a sponge.

Planting: Monosolenium tenerum reproduces by division of the thallus, and planting this aquatic plant is generally used to create the feeling of moss in a forest. When trimming, you should use an angled cut and avoid damaging the growth points at the leaf tips. When planting, you need to use fine mesh or black thread to fix it onto stones of different shapes, or to net the whole thing onto a large piece of driftwood.

Temperature: It must not be lower than 22 degrees C, and it is best kept above 25 degrees C for it to grow well.

Light: Monosolenium tenerum is not suitable for growing in shady places. It needs a certain amount of diffused light or a semi-shaded environment, and during care, a certain amount of light should be provided.

III. Combined aquascaping of Monosolenium tenerum and green algae

Monosolenium tenerum is often tied onto stones to create an endless expanse of lush grassland, and it can also be tied onto stones to create a dense clump of grass. To tie Monosolenium tenerum, white or dark nylon mesh is generally used (cotton thread or fishing line can also be used for tying, but it is relatively harder to tie). Gently separate the clump of Monosolenium tenerum, spread it thinly onto the driftwood, and gently tie it with nylon mesh. Once the Monosolenium tenerum tied onto driftwood has formed a scene, it looks like a dense clump of grass and is extremely beautiful.

Green algae is a relatively advanced type of algae, a "close relative" of the Chlorella genus, appearing in the shape of hair strands and sometimes also in a cottony form. It is originally the "great enemy" of a planted aquarium, but if controlled well, it can also "turn harm into a treasure" and become a beautiful sight in the aquarium. In fact, the reproduction and maintenance of green algae are not easy, and the water quality must be good; therefore, it becomes an "indicator" for testing the water quality of an aquarium. Green algae often grows naturally on driftwood, so it can attach to driftwood without needing to be tied.

The most beloved feature of Monosolenium tenerum is that little bubbles emerge from its Y-shaped clustered leaf tips, transforming into a mermaid's blessing. It is one of the essential plants for aquarium aquascaping.
