[Anthurium Care Methods and Precautions] How to Grow Anthurium

Anthurium is also called flamingo flower or red anthurium, and we are used to calling it red anthurium. Its flowers are brilliantly colored and bloom in all four seasons, giving it high ornamental value. Red anthurium can be grown in potting soil or hydroponically. Below, let us look at the care methods and precautions for red anthurium.

I. Care Methods for Anthurium

First, disinfect the roots of the red anthurium. You can use clean water (tap water left to stand for 2 days) to rinse off the growing medium, then soak and disinfect with a 1000-fold dilution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes. After washing it clean, cut off old roots and residual roots, and remove the flowers.

Then, place the red anthurium plant in a container, fill it with expanded clay pebbles, then dilute rooting powder according to the ratio and spray the pebbles moist. Be careful not to let too much water accumulate below; if there is too much water, just pour it out.

During routine care, pay attention to changing the water regularly. Generally, in spring and autumn, change the water every 5-7 days; in winter, change it every 7-10 days; in summer, when temperatures are high, change it every 2-3 days. When changing the water, do not fill it too full. At least 1/2 of the plant's roots should be exposed above the water, so that the exposed part can absorb enough oxygen.

Red anthurium likes a warm, humid, and shady environment. Normally it should be placed in a ventilated spot with scattered light. In summer, it is best not to exceed 28°C; in winter, below 14°C it will suffer cold damage, so it must be kept warm. Relative humidity must not be lower than 80%, otherwise the edges of the leaves and the red spathes will dry up. Be sure to spray water to maintain air humidity.

II. Precautions for Growing Anthurium at Home

1. Humidity

Normal growth of red anthurium requires about 70% air humidity, which is generally difficult to achieve in ordinary home growing. You can use a clean wet towel to wipe the leaves moist several times a day, or spray water regularly around the plant to increase air humidity. (But be sure not to sprinkle water on the flowers, so as not to affect their ornamental quality.)

2. Watering and Fertilizing

Under normal growth conditions, water the growing soil weekly, alternating between letting it dry and keeping it moist. Generally follow the principle of not watering when the soil surface is dry, and watering thoroughly when you do water. In spring, autumn, and winter, the frequency and amount of watering can be appropriately reduced. Every half month, apply a 7-8% special nutrient solution or a 500-fold diluted fertilizer solution along with watering.

3. Pruning

Under normal circumstances, during the growth of red anthurium, the basal petioles gradually degenerate; when the stipules dry out, they can be cut off promptly. After flowering, when the flower stalk turns yellow, it should also be cut off as soon as possible from the base, leaving a 2 cm protective stub.

4. Temperature

When growing red anthurium at home, ensure the temperature as much as possible. The optimum growth temperature for red anthurium is 16-24°C, and the minimum temperature should be kept above 12°C. If an ordinary household has heating facilities, this condition is easy to meet. But at the same time, note that the flowerpot must not be placed on top of a radiator or too close to it. When the summer temperature exceeds 30°C, move the plant to a ventilated room that is relatively on the north side, and spray water around the plant to cool it down.

III. Matching Anthurium with Home Decor Styles

The red anthurium has a unique appearance, with leaves so green they seem about to drip, and fiery red spathe inflorescences sitting atop them. The pairing of red and green looks so eye-catching, and the yellow spadix set within that fiery red adds the perfect finishing touch. We cannot help but praise such a combination as a masterpiece of nature. It is precisely because of its outstanding beauty that the red anthurium is loved by many flower enthusiasts.

The red anthurium and flowers of the same genus are emerging cut flowers and potted flowers both domestically and abroad. Each flower can last up to one month, and it can bloom throughout the year. Because the spathes of anthurium are brilliantly colored, the plant is beautiful, and the ornamental period is long, market demand is increasing. Potted flowers are mostly used as decorative plants on coffee tables and desks indoors.

Using the Western flower arrangement style, arrange them in clusters in a low, shallow vase, with small white or purple flowers around them as accents, making the hall look exceptionally magnificent and elegant. In addition, when a new store opens or at wedding celebrations, people also choose it to make flower baskets to add a festive atmosphere. The Japanese, who excel at flower arrangement, honor it with the reputation of "large red round fan."

These are the collected care methods and precautions for anthurium. From these, it can be seen that growing anthurium is not easy. To grow anthurium well, careful tending is also needed, so that it can better decorate our living spaces.
