[What to Do When Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' Leaves Turn Yellow] How to Grow Philodendron 'Golden Diamond'

Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) is a popular evergreen foliage plant in recent years. Its leaves are evenly arranged with moderate spread, thick and emerald green, with a glossy, stiff surface and high ornamental value. However, if care and management are improper, the leaves easily turn yellow and wilt, which not only affects the plant's appearance but also affects its growth, and in severe cases can even cause the plant to die. Therefore, when yellowing leaves appear on Philodendron 'Golden Diamond', the cause should be identified promptly and corrected.

What to Do When Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' Leaves Turn Yellow

The main causes of leaf yellowing in Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' are unsuitable temperature, low humidity, unsuitable light, over-fertilization, too-frequent watering, and pest or disease damage.

The temperature needs to be kept around 20°C and must not drop below 10°C, and the plant should also be protected from heating, air conditioning and cold drafts.

Air humidity should be kept between 50-75%. Below 50%, leaves tend to turn yellow and edges dry out. Humidity is often increased by misting and sprinkling water.

It likes light but dislikes direct strong sunlight. The growing environment is best kept under semi-shade or diffused light; it should not be placed in a shaded environment for long periods, otherwise the leaves will very easily turn yellow.

Prevention and treatment methods:

1. The temperature needs to be kept around 20°C and must not drop below 10°C, and the plant should also be protected from heating, air conditioning and cold drafts.

2. Air humidity should be kept between 50~75%. Below 50%, leaves tend to turn yellow and edges dry out. Humidity is often increased by misting and sprinkling water.

3. It likes light but dislikes direct strong sunlight. The growing environment is best kept under semi-shade or diffused light; it should not be placed in a shaded environment for long periods, otherwise the leaves will very easily turn yellow.

4. Fertilize on the principle of light, frequent applications, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer.

5. Watering is best done when the soil surface is dry. In the high-temperature period of summer, the soil can be kept moist; in winter, if the ambient temperature is below 15°C, water alternately wet and dry.

5. Diseases are mainly caused by improper care or an unsuitable environment and can generally be prevented through good care and management. When disease occurs, spray with carbendazim, chlorothalonil, etc. for control. The main pest is red spider mite, generally caused by dry air; frequent misting and wiping of the leaves can effectively prevent it. When pests are present, spray with a specific pesticide for control, such as dicofol.

Hydroponic Method for Philodendron 'Golden Diamond'

In hydroponic flowers, the roots soak in nutrient solution, and the buffering capacity of the nutrient solution is somewhat poorer than that of a substrate. Due to plant metabolism, new roots are constantly produced, and the roots may also secrete some toxic substances, which adversely affect root growth and development. Moreover, because different flowers absorb nutrients differently and selectively, nutrient imbalance in the nutrient solution is often caused.

Sometimes this causes nutrient deficiency and physiological diseases. In addition, because temperature affects pH, imbalance can also occur, especially in hydroponic systems. Therefore, the solution must be changed regularly in hydroponics. Change the solution once a month in winter, spring and autumn, and once every 25 days in summer. So a good nutrient solution must have strong buffering capacity, can stabilize the plant's growing environment, and ensure nutrient balance.

How to Grow Philodendron 'Golden Diamond'

① Soil: Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' has no strict requirements for soil and grows best in sandy loam rich in humus and well drained. For potting, a nutrient soil mixed with peat and perlite is often used.

② Light: Apart from shading during the strong sunlight of summer, give Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' as good light as possible in the other seasons, especially in winter, when light must be sufficient.

③ Watering: Apart from keeping the pot soil moist during high temperatures (above 26°C), at other times water thoroughly only after the surface soil is dry.

④ Fertilizing: At temperatures between 16~30°C, fertilize in small amounts but frequently; below 15°C or above 30°C, try not to fertilize.

⑤ Ventilation: If the outdoor temperature can stay above 15°C, ventilate as much as possible, as this is beneficial to the growth of Philodendron 'Golden Diamond'.

⑥ Pruning: If some Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' leaves turn yellow, which sometimes also occurs for normal physiological reasons, simply cut them off.

⑦ Humidity: It is best kept above 75%. Philodendron 'Golden Diamond' is not tolerant of dryness and likes a moist environment!
